Can this be cause by acid reflux/

Posted , 10 users are following.

I've had acid reflux problems for almost a year but lately I'm always being nauseous and I feel like something is stuck in my right throat. I'm feeling this all the time, even when I wake up, when I eat, before I go to sleep, etc..

My acid reflux decresed from how it started so I'm having less acid reflux but I don't know if this problem is related.

I'm going to an ENT Doctor (Ear,Nose and Throat Doctor) as to check what's wrong with what i'm feeling in my right throat, but I believe that my nauseous is related to what I'm feeling.

If he doesn't find anything, I will go to a specialised doctor regarding acid reflux.

    Hi

You have Eosophagitis. When it gets as bad as giving you swallowing problems it is time to have an Endoscopy. The condition can, in certain circumstances be quite dangerous, if not treated. You may well have - like thousands of others - a Hiatus Hernia which is causing the problem.

You do not need an ENT consultant for this one. You need a Gastroenterological Consultant and an Endoscopy to examine your Eosophagus.

Hi thanks for your help, I did an appointment with my Gastroenterological Doctor tomorrow.

I had an endoscopy appointment but I was afraid to go, hopefully I'll make some courage.

The feeling of something stuck in your throat is probably globus. It is a common symptom on reflux reported by 50% of 100 respondients to a survey last year. It is caused by the cricopharyngeal muscle which constitutes the ipper oesophageal sphincter tightening or going into spasm in an attempt to prevent extra-oesophageal reflux, commonly known as LPR.

If you find the DownWithAcid org uk website, check out the page on Extra-Oesophageal reflux / LPR.

Acid may decrease but reflux may continue.

It is best to see your doctor first. But it is possible. I too have problems with my right ear and the right side of my throat. Are you right handed? Do you sleep on your right side while sleeping? At night the flow of acid will travel into these areas and if you are lying on the right side it is possible that this is the reason. I went to my a gastroenterologist this past Tuesday he said that it is possible that it can travel into your throat, nasal passages, and ears. I went to my ENT, he did one endoscopy. My gastroenterologist is scheduling another one. I went to my medical doctor first, then my ENT, and now my Gastroenterologist.

Aspirated extra-oesophageal reflux will affect the right side more than the left if you sleep on your right side. This is because the stomach can empty into the lower oesophagus more easily in this position.

To reduce nocturnal reflux, let gravity help by raising the bed head by 6 to 8 inches on blocks and sleep on your left side.

Yes my doctors told me to do this. Raise the bed not your head. It was easier for me to get use to sleeping this way by gradually raising it a few inches at a time over several days.

I completely sympathise with you as I have all the same symptoms and everyone who's commented is right its all linked with reflux! A gastroenterologist would be your best bet x

I made an appointment to see a gastroenterologist tomorrow as my problem is that I am afraid to do the endoscopy and it is difficult to see what's causing the problem

    Dear jj1234

Having tests done can be scary. I was afraid when i had mine done. Not of the test though, it is really simple and painless may a little uncomfotable. I guess I was afraid of the results. This is your health. Always keep check on it.

Yes I know I will see what the gastroenterologist will tell me today

It's actually best to consult with your physician. It must be also related to your diet and stuff. Have you changed your diet lately? I've had the same issue, I mean yeah I have been diagnosed with acid reflux and was even told to undergo colonoscopy if the PPI's didn't help. I was on a strict diet for a week and afer that and luckily didn't have to go through any procedure. Have you tried taking enzymes to help with acid reflux? that might help, it did for me. worth a try.

Remember acid and reflux are not always the same thing. When they are experienced in combination, they can lead to permanent damage of teh oesophagus (Barrett's Oesophagus) which in some people can lead to cancer.

Although some dietary changes can help reduce acidity (if you identify your personal triggers), reflux needs to be controlled by postural and lifestyle changes.

And beware the myths and misconceptions - particularly the alkaline water myth!

See the Myths and misconceptions chapter of DownWithAcid org uk.

Interesting Barrett's, I wondered about alkaline water.

my medication is causing my reflux, though doctors disagree! Or won't admit it, Prednisone. No matter what I eat or drink I get the awful flutter in my esophagus! So I can't blame foods.  I've been eating just meats and veggies for 10 months now. No flour, no grains, no dairy, no starches, ...

was drinking red wine, but had to stop. Lost my tastebuds!

ENT scoped my throat and saw lots of inflammation. He and endoscopy doctor said mild acid reflux.

Im so frustrated. I tried Prilosec for 2 weeks, didn't help. I refuse to take PPI's now since I heard they can be worse.

I'm trying licorice, which helps, but hard to remember to chew 20 minutes before eating. I also try aloe juice.

My upper back hurts bug time, so I lie on stomach to relieve pain, and was surprised my reflux symptoms also stopped! Until I stand up of course. Ugh.

Sometimes just swallowing give me flutter. Dentist said I have dry mouth now too. Damn Prednisone.

From the US Library of Medicine, "Prednisone may cause side effects. Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away: ... heartburn ..."

You may need to take Prilosec (omeprazole) for longer than 2 weeks to see if they're effective. And you may need to take 40mg for a couple of weeks initially before dropping back to 20mg maintenance. They need to be taken every day - best is about half an hour before breakfast.

But don't listen to all the nonsense about the drugs being dangerous, they are amongst the safest drugs going if used correctly.

Coincidentally yesterday an article by Dr Philip S Chua in the CEBU Daily News entitled "Side effects of ‘antacids’" if you want to Google it, made it clear, "There is no evidence that these medications are more harmful than beneficial. PPI drugs are wonders in modern therapy and benefit hundreds of millions of people around the globe."

Problems with PPIs come from misuse. They should always be under management supervision of a physician and used at lowest effective dose. They are not an on-demand drug. Their ready availability over-the-counter has lead to the misuse which prompted FDA warnings. It's not the drugs that are a problem but the induced hypochlorhydria that can result from them being too good at the job they're meant to do.

Hypochlorhydria (low stomach acid) can occur if too high a dose is maintained for too long. The resut can be malabsorption of essential minerals including calcium, iron and magnesium etc and reduced immunity from bacterial infection.

If you're taking liquorice, ensure its deglycyrrhizinated (DGL) as the glycyrrhizic acid in liquorice can have harmful side effects.

Neither Aloe Vera and DGL will cure acid hypersecretion nor reflux. They are both demulcents forming a soothing layer over inflammation and possibly increasing production of mucous thus possibly providing symptom relief.

      Wow, thanks for info Barretts

the Liquorice is DGL.  Good to know about the PPIs. Though when I've told my doctors, my ENT, Rheumy, Primary that it didn't work when I took it for the two weeks Primary told me to take, they didn't press the issue.  Kind of surprises me.

i have ENT appt on Friday, I'll ask about it again.  I just don't want my esophagus to get worse.

so, sounds like the aloe juice should be taken before eating.  Others take the prednisone with milk and haven't seemed to get acid reflux. But my Rheumy said absolutlely no dairy as its inflammatory.

I reported the Prednisone gave me chest tightness for 3-4 hours after I took it for months, but they didn't seem to care. Until I had some signs of dry mouth then soon after possible Thrush and lost tastebuds... I often wonder if I was allergic to the Pred! I was on 20 mg, then dropped 2 1\2 mg until 10... Now dropping slowly, down to 5 mg.

yes, I know about the other side effects of Pred... I'm 54 going on 84!
