Hi,
I was on Citalopram for about seven years, since my late teens. I stopped about a year and a half ago. I really want to restart it and wished I'd never stopped, but when I tried it again recently I was terribly wired and barely slept for days. This was from taking only 5mg and I was on 20mg before. I didn't have any problem when I first started taking it years ago.
I just wondered if anyone else has had the same problem with Citalopram or similar antidepressant, and whether or not you persevered and managed to get back on it.
Thanks,
Rachel

Hi Rach, I was much the same, stopped & started a few times, my advice is to persevere , im actually coping on 5mg now & im sure If you stick to 5's also, the side effects will diminish quickly, have you tried some meditation before bedtime?

Similar experience here. I was doing well on 20mg and thought I would stop. As i've said on other posts big mistake. I've started back on them starting on 10mg. I'm glad im not suicidal because the side effects this time around it may have pushed me over the edge. I'm pleased to say that most of the side effects have now died down. What helped me to keep on taking the tablets was this forum and the encouragement I got on here. I know I was far better on 20mg and thats my next big step, going up another 10mg. Reading other peoples posts on here it does seem that going back on this drug is harder the second time around. I wish i was one of the lucky ones who arent affected the second time around. Still, i know it might be a rough ride going up another 10mg but I also know I'll be back to my old self and happier in my life. Hope this encourages you Rachel.

Hi Rachel
First time round on Citalopram I was fine and it worked well for me I was on 60mg before it changed to 40mg.
Second time round, I had alot of side effects, but then I was also taking other heavy duty meds with it, so difficult to know if it was from citalopram or the cocktail of meds I was on. Unfortunately, I developed a sensitivity to all meds and other things.
My doctor put it down to me being post menopausal.

Hi there, this is my 3rd time and have to say its been more difficult each time with more side effects. Ive had a few good days but seem to be in awful blip. i am only on 10mg but did increase to 20mg and felt so awful i decreased which probably hasnt helped matters. i am sure they will work but it is hard to keep going to work and looking after my daughter with no motivation.

Hi, I too have just restarted citalopram for the 2nd time. I am finding it so difficult this time. I have been signed off work as the days are awful atm. I am now on day 23, and still suffering, not sure what to think. my side effects currently are lack of appetite/feeling sick, intense hunger pangs, constant anxiety, internal shaking and general jitteryness and not sleeping. I have no motivation whatsoever and I'm really struggling. Has anyone been through this, I thought they would have subsided by now? Did the citalopram work in the end? I really don't want to swap meds.

Hi there,
This is my third time on. I'm at 10mg and although the windows of feeling OK are gradually getting longer, am definitely still having some waves of feeling weird, out of it., and disrupted sleep, upset stomach, the works. It's really horrible. At the moment, have just passed the 4 month mark. Although I'm a lot better than back in June, I'm definitely not 100 per cent yet. But am getting there.
It's definitely been harder to restabilise this time. Times number 1 and 2 were pretty easy, and it took about 3 months. This time, it's taking longer, for sure although, as I said, I've definitely improved.
Am seriously considering not coming off again, even when I feel well. We will have to see.
I would say persevere for a bit.

I am going through this now - restarted three weeks ago. I've been on citalopram three times before, each time progressively harder to get on. This time sheer hell Honestly feel like i'm dying!
Does this get better? I cannot imagine trying to persevere much longer. Can't sleep, can't eat, anxiety 24/7, jitters/agitation, dry eyes, dry lips, dry cough... my guts are a mess.
Can anyone encourage? 😦

It will get better. I have restarted citalopram and now on day 28. only in the last week have I felt relatively human. I've really struggled with side effects this time around especially stomach problems and feeling jittery 24/7. Please believe me that you will start to feel better soon xxxx
