Cataract surgery on second eye Tuesday..what to so?

I had first eye corrected a week ago for distance. Am finding it amazing but worried about second eye. I am naturally very nearsighted and have enjoyed for years being able to read without glasses, and do most things close. I do not want to give that up. The plan is to give me a near vision lens in my second eye, but the surgeon says I may need glasses for close work. I do not understand why. And I am considering waiting until I must have the second done as I am seeing quite well with no glasses now. Can anyone help me understand why I'd need glasses?

The artificial lens does not have the ability to focus in the same way as the natural lens. I had my eyes done 2 years ago, one for distance and one for close. I only use reading glasses for small print, (i-phone) or prolonged reading. Also I found it helpful to wear glasses that correct my close-up eye for distance for driving at night. Most of the time I do not need glasses. I found the limitations worth it in order to be without glasses the majority of the time.

That is what I fear. perhaps I should postpone the second eye. At this point my left eye isn't really bad and having had the right eye corrected for distance it seems really perfect. I do not need glasses for anything. I MUST decide tomorrow. THIS IS REALLY DIFFICULT.

If you are unsure, WAIT. This is an elective procedure. I suggest you try contacts at various focal points so see what is might work for you, and what is acceptable trade off. No lens will replace your natural eye, so all choices have a trade off.

I also canceled my 2nd eye the day before surgery because I was not sure of what to do. It is much better to be sure than be disappointed with your outcome.

i agree with Mady. Postpone if you are seeing well now. i had my right eye done in FEB, and they tried to push me to do left eye in march. That eye has a cataract, but i still see 20/20 out of it. so, i declined surgery. when in doubt...wait. THAT's my motto. this is elective surgery.

    Hi Pat,

I would agree with others that you should wait a while. It may be that your eyes adjust quite well to this new "monovision" that you have. My left (lens) eye was set for distance and my naturally nearsighted right eye are 2 diopters apart. It took me a couple of months but I've adjusted well and have not needed glasses. I feel that around 95% of my needs are met. It makes no sense to have an elective surgery unless the case is compelling in my opinion.

    Good luck,

    IG

Thanks to everyone for help in sorting this out. I decided this morning after meeting w my surgeon to go ahead. I really had a pretty bad cataract in each eye and have been seriously near sighted for many years. I also am finding as the new lens is settling in my distance vision is so good the balance between the two eyes is beginning to be too much to bridge with the blurring of the near vision eye. I will have the second eye set for near but not quite as near as it presently is and hope it is more like what I had when I first went to monovision with the single contact. Tomorrow is D-day. I have my fingers crossed. The reason the surgeon was comfortable was I have been so successful with monovision for almost 30 years. I also am finding the difference in color that I see with each eye is not somehting I want for long. So wish me luck and thanks again.
