Cataracts

I have been diagnosed with cataracts by an optometrist. When I saw a specialist it turned out I also had a macular hole, which was operated on straight away. The cataracts were not too bad, but would quickly get worse because of the surgery. My problem is that my eyesight has improved to what it was about 30 years ago, still need glasses for reading, but no longer for driving. I know the macular surgery would improve my eyesight but I can't believe it could improve to this degree. I have read somewhere that cataract symptoms can include temporary improvement. Has anyone had a similar experience?9

    Hi Tamara 51584

I have not heard of anyone’s cataracts improving just that over time they get worse.  For some they progress rapidly like mine did and for others it can take years before surgery is needed.

No one should get cataract surgery unless vision cannot be improved anymore with galasses or contact lenses.  Countries with Medicare coverage will cover cayaract surgery costs once it becomes necessary.

The cataract can affect the spherical power of the lens in addition to causing blurriness because of the lens being unclear. The required spherical correction required for my left eye started increasing significantly (I was myopic) as the cataract developed, but it could have gone the other way. For my right eye, the required spherical correction did decrease a small amount due to the cataract.

The bottom line:  while your best corrected vision (that is, the best you can have with prescription glasses) will always deteriorate due to a cataract, your uncorrected vision (i.e, without glasses) at distance may improve as the cataract starts to develop.

so because of the macular hole being corrected it has helped your eyesight with improvement.   That is great and i hope all continues well for you.
