changing my own dose

I have tried and tried to reach my doctor regarding having hives with my tapazole dose. I am currently taking 20 mg daily. I'd like to try 10mg in the am and 10mg in the pm to see if the hives die down. I don't want to take PTU because of the liver failure./transplant issues that come with it. Any ideas? suggestions?

Hi nursespecialist, I used to get hives and itchy skin when I started taking Carbimazole (30mg/day). I heared this can be a side effect at higher doses.

Btw Carbimazole is transformed to Methimazole (the active ingredient of Tapazole) in the body.

I am pretty sure your endocrinologist won't mind if you split the dose (mine did not). It is actually better to do it, since you avoid spikes of medication in your blood stream.  You just have to make sure that you take the prescribed dose over a 24 hour period.

For me the problem with itchy skin disappeared after the dose got reduced. To suppress the skin allergy in the initial phase I started taking Piriteze tablets (active ingredient cetirizine hydrochloride) and it helped me.

The suggested dosage of L-Carnitine by the article on Hyperthyroid patients is 3,000 to 4,000 mg per day.  This is usually when you are first diagnosed and are very deficient in it because you lose this from your muscles through urination.  I took 1,000 mg to start and then increased it to the 3,000 mg dosage for the Regular L-Carnitine.  It is available in most Health Food stores or online.  In Canada it is also available by prescription at a considerably higher cost (i.e. $300. for prescription and $40 in the health food store).   Make sure you get Regular L-Carnitine and not Acetyl-L-Carnitine to start.  My current dosage of it is now 500 mg on alternate days when I do not take the Tapazole.  My Carnitine levels are fine now and my thyroid levels are normal.  I continue to take 1,000 IU of Vitamin D although when I was deficient, I took up to 5,000 IU.  I take 200 mg of Magnesium daily.  You can ask your doc to test you for these but most docs know nothing about supplements and will not endorse them because of that.  Show him the Benvenga article if you want to discuss Carnitine with him.
