cholesterol of 6.9?

I recently had a check up at the doctors who has put me on blood pressure tablets wgich has now brought my blood pressure down to 124/76 from 158/110 in  3 weeks but she has also said my cholesterol level of 6.9 is too high and my blood test showed i may have kidny problems. She has advised another blood test in 3 months and said not to eat red meat for 3 days before and drink lots of water and my kidney test may come back fine.

I have never suffered with blood pressure or cholesterol before, I am 47 and generally in good health but am going through my change, could this be the cause? and I should I be worried by results, I do not want to have to take tablets forever.

I ahve cut out salt and brought all low fat alternatives and started to do 30 mins exercise 4 times a week . Is there anything else I should do to help .

    Hi Jane,

When you have indication that the Kidney has some issues, you have to be careful about what the medicine,  food and drinks you take.

I suggest you to closely followup with your GP and monitor your health.  Once you started taking BP medicine, it is not good to stop.

Also you need to do lot of life style changes.  You search in Google for "Home Remedies for High Cholesterol" get some good suggested foods.

I always suggest Celery to control BP in addition to regular exercise

    Good luck

Beetroot helps to lower BP and porridge lowers cholesterol!

My BP is now under control but I take 3 tablets in order to achieve that.  For the past year, I have been eating porridge most mornings, with a banana and a handful of blueberries and my cholesterol has dropped from 8.5 or thereabouts, to 7 and everyone is very pleased!  [I have been taking steroids for 3 years and stopped on Oct 7th but I am still taking Methotrexate]

I have been eating a lot of fish lately and very little red meat or indeed, meat of any sort.  I eat  fruit and veg and nuts

I think it is the Methotrexate that has messed around with my appetite.

I eat a minimum of salt and am not keen on sweet things.  I don't put anything in/on my porridge and I make it with half milk [semi skimmed] and half water
