Citalopram does it work?

Hi I started getting random panic attacks last year they started getting worse, I ended up having a break down couldn't leave the house felt so ill really anxious couldn't stop crying! I ended up in hospital they gave me dizapam which really chilled me out! Saved my life. Went to docs the next day and was giving 10mg citalopram I got a few side effects couldnt eat or sleep and started crying more made me feel a bit more depressed, I only stayed on them 3 weeks and stopped! The last year I just take propranolol when needed but I know it's not going to cure me sad I still feel low don't want to do anything anymore keep pushing everyone away! I snap at everyone all the time I have broken sleep feel anxious a lot! Should I maybe try citalopram again but stick it out this time? Has it helped anyone get back to there old self? I just want to be me again sad I start counselling in January but I don't think it will be enough for me. Any positive reviews on citalopram would be great?

I have the same problems Nix, have been on Citalopram and Propranolol for just over 3 weeks and I sort of feel a bit worse that I did a week ago.   Most of the comments on here say persevere with the medication.   The main reason I got like this in the first place has now passed and I thought I would just go back to normal.  However I am still getting the anxiety and like you want to be my old self again. My main problem is I dont fancy eating anything and I am hungry all the time and a vicious circle has developed.  I believe you shouldnt stop the medication without consulting your Dr and you dont say you have been back to see him/her.  Your lucky to get your CBT so soon and that should also help.

Yeah I started to feel a bit worse when I started the meds to, felt more depressed. I know they can make you feel worse before they start working though. I wish I just stuck with them when I was put on them, as this whole year has been a write of for me. 3 weeks wasint enough for them to kick in. I have docs today so I am going to ask if I can try them again. Let me know how you get on with them, hope you feel better soon x

Hi nix what you just said is spot on on how I've been this pass year! I haven't got a clue why am like it so please don't think ur alone! My doctor has put me on diazepam this past year and been great BUT that just papers over the cracks no medication will cure this only thing that will cure it is YOURSELF!

I've just done my cbt course that my doctor put me on it was a big help! Ur be surprised how good counselling is! Since I've done it I've learned how to cope better! Sounds like ur anxious about being anxious if you what I mean. Ur fearing the next panic attack! Well that's what I get like but u gotta take urself away from that u gotta think well ok this is me and am understanding what my body is doing and am just gonna let it do it's thing.

It's hard I no but I've trying to read up and educate myself about anxiety and panic, have a read up and it might make you feel better

    hi

i used to be on one of the older ones sadly it cardio toxic so i had to come off. However after  many discussion with psychiatrist i was prescriber sertraline and it helps me whereas others dont. But i am also aware this doesnt work for many others , mine had an effect on PTSD type symptoms within 48 hours so i stuck with it.

you need to see a psychiatrist they specialise in medication  for heads!!

yep i agree the old benzo worked but a 100% addictive  i have 2.5mgs at night and know i m stuck with it but it eases the nightmares.

keep hunting trying and take the counselling

    good luck

Hi Gillian, have you tried a sleep aid with valerian in them? I take around 4 about 1 hour before bed (package says no more than 2), but it's natural and is a natural mild antianxiolitic. Often works for me but I don't take every night just when I feel I need too, you could perhaps just take a smaller amount of benzo and see how you get on with sleep aid, if it works it's a result? N
