Cold symptoms before an outbreak?

I was diagnosed with HSV-1 on my genitals last spring. My boyfriend had given it to me through oral sex (which I am now realizing it's way more common with people than I thought) my first outbreak was HORRIBLE, I will never forget it. I realize that the initial outbreak is supposed to be the worst and I have also read that it's rare that it returns and if it does, it won't be as severe. Last month, right before my period came...I got some pain in my left leg (left side is where my outbreak usually happens), like almost a nerve pain. I didn't realize this could be a sign of an outbreak, but then I began itching and all of that fun stuff...noticed the outbreak and although it sucked and was painful, it didn't last as long as the initial outbreak and wasn't as severe thankfully.
It's been less than a month since that, and I have noticed some itching and uncomfortable feeling in my genital area, I was bleeding but noticed it was from a cut down there and it has disappeared. I keep checking but there are no sores, nothing so far. But before the itching got as uncomfortable as it is now (a few days ago) I had a VERY sore throat and my left side of my throat was extremely swollen and almost sticking out. It felt like cold symptoms to me, but then it disappeared. So now all I have is the itching & uncomfortable feeling down there.
I realize this post is long, but I am still so new to this and I'm still learning. I enjoy hearing other people's experiences with this! Would getting those cold symptoms be a sign of an outbreak happening? I just find it strange that it's so soon from the last time I had one. I also have been VERY stressed, so I'm wondering if that's what has brought these on since the initial outbreak.
Thanks for reading!

I wish I knew!!!! I'm like you I got HSV1 from oral and my initial outbreak was awful I was so sick. I'm curious as to how many outbreaks are you having? Do you take a daily suppressant.?

I can imagine!!!! Such a terrible experience, I completely feel your pain. I don't take a daily suppressant, only L-lysine daily with my multivitamin. I had the initial outbreak and then one more & it was months later.. around 6 months to be exact. Those were my only outbreaks thus far. I was pretty upset last month when I got the next outbreak (I had been dealing with ALOT of panic attacks and stress beforehand) because all along I was reading how "rare" it is for you to get another outbreak with HSV-1 on the genitals. What about you?

I have only had the one so far but that was in October. So not that long ago. I take lysine too along with B12 and Zinc and a multi vitamin. No idea if that helps. However I do take a suppressant because I'm so paranoid. I'm wondering if I shouldn't. Was your second outbreak bad?

It honestly wasn't bad at all. (Not to be TMI) but I only had 2 small sores and they were gone within the week. The most annoying pain was my legs and the soreness, which came on the first time I had the outbreak also. And since then, I'm happy to say..no other symptoms or outbreaks.

It's very possible you had the cold symptoms from an unrelated respiratory infection, which weakened your immune system and caused the herpes outbreak. I keep hearing from my doctors that everyone has it wrong that type 1 and 2 are only above/below the waist, respectively. I have type 2 in both locations; the mouth was worse initially, I didn't even recognize any genital symptoms for years. I would not be surprised at all if type 1 recurs genitally more than most believe, because I years later I still get subtle oral symptoms from 2 (like cracked chapped lips ).

This virus makes us all feel bad, in A LOT of ways.
Personally, i have found relief naturally by ingesting Garlic, Oil of Oregano, Garlic, and Cayenne oils. Two at a time for two weeks each. Have not been on any "HSV medications", so these oils have really helped. You probably should eat a healthy diet when ingesting the oils also for them to be most effective. Rest also aids in health and low stress is always a positive.
