I recently did a Cologuard test... the "newer" one where you send in two samples... a large one in a container and the old "popsicle stick" one... I received word from my GastroDoc that the result was "positive". I asked them which test (or both) showed up "positive"??? They answered... it is only a one word result: "Positive".
I was confused, so I called Cologuard... they said they do several tests on the stool samples... one for hemoglobin (blood) and eleven different "biomarker" tests for mutated cells, indicating potential pre-cancer or cancer conditions... I asked the rep why they do not furnish the DETAILED results of all these different tests... because... IF the only "positive" test result is blood in the stool... and they do not reveal just how much blood was found (it must vary dramatically and have a huge effect on the different levels of concern it should promote) that is FAR different that finding mutated cancerous or per-cancerous cells! Blood in the stool can come from MANY different conditions and sources, the most obvious is hemorrhoids... but can also come from the wide use of artificial sweeteners, especially Sorbitol, which I have been consuming relatively large amounts of via Trident gum...
I do not want to do a colonoscopy, unless really necessary... they can be dangerous in several ways... the instruments, re-used, can never be completely sterilized... and perforations of the colon walls can lead to sepsis... even the most populat antibiotic for post colonoscopy is Cipro, itself a dangerous drug! Sound paranoid? Maybe so.
Any thoughts?
