I was recently diagnosed with herpes. In a 3 year relationship with the same man. If this had been dormant in me wouldn't I have had an outbreak before now?

OK... If you're born w it, you'd know.. Believe me. There are several points here 1. What strain is it? If it's hsv 1, you coukd have gotten it from oral sex from him. 2. If it's hsv 2, he may be the carrier and is asymptomatic and now you finally caught it. 3. You have had it and something has compromised your immune system and it is just now rearing its ugly head. This has happened to people w diabetes who haven't had sex for 8 plus yrs and it suddenly pops up. 4. He cheated.. That's how two of my gfs got it from their bf.

So start off w the first ones and rule it out that way. If he doesnt test positive fie hsv 2, then it is 3. If he does test positive for hsv 2, it is either option 2 or 4. If it is hsv 1, then it is option 1. So that's the only way to rule it out.

I just can't figure out where I got it. I've only had sex with one person for the last 3 years and he tested negative.

No. He said his ex wife used to get a lot of cold sores.  But they've been divorced 8 years.  That's why this is so confusing.  I'm 53 years old can count on 1 hand how many partner's I've had.

What sort of test did he have to see if he had herpes or not? He could of caught it from his ex wife and just be a carrier and not actually have an outbreak but be shredding the virus and thats how he past it on to you..are you going through a stressful time at the moment? Or anything to lower your immune? As you could of suddenly just had your first outbreak..some people only ever have one outbreak and then have nothing for the rest of your life x

I have deleted all of the argumentative posts in this discussion. All that this achieves is to discourage other users from posting advice or the original poster to give up asking for advice. If you do not agree with other users comments do not start a debate in other users' discussions nor start name calling etc. If you wish to have a debate about the pathology of herpes etc then start a new discussion. I will ask that the deleted comments are removed completely to tidy up this discussion.
