A couple of weeks ago I was diagnosed with genital herpes and my doctor said it was a new infection. I have been with the same guy for 3 years and he went to have a test and it came back negative! How is this possible if it’s a new infection?

It's new for him, too, and he tested too soon. He did the wrong test (should be IgG, never IgM). He didn't do any test and only told you he had. He has HSV1 and is one of the one in four who do not show up in results (does not happen with HSV2).

I seen where his results show negative but really I was so upset that I had it that I didn’t really pay attention to it because of the only thing I could think of at the time is where he got it from and how long ago!??

Ah, that's unfortunate. Some people are diagnosed by IgM alone, which wouldn't mean anything, so I was wondering if that might be the same in your case, but alas. If the swab was positive, then that's conclusive. Was your swab positive and your IgG still negative? If so, then this is a new infection and it can only have come from your partner, unless you have been involved with somebody else recently. If not, then ask to see his results again. Something doesn't add up.

Make sure it's IgG, not IgM. All the best!

The test results came back.
He tested positive for hsv1 but not 2.
They couldn’t do a swab because he didn’t have anymore lesions.
I’m so devastated and confused even more! I have ONLY been with him for all these years but my doc said mine was a recent infection. How? How could this be??
