considering cataract surgery, what are some prescriptions before and results after

I have worn glasses since i was 9. I am currently 41 years old and have developed cataracts. I am farsighted as my RX is +5 in one eye and +5.75 in my other eye. I was considering getting the PanOptix lens however my question was if my vision is fine for distance and reading with this RX could i accomplish the same thing by getting Mono vision lens.

Question 2 is for people that have had the surgery already. Were any of you farsighted and what was your prescription before and results after?

Thanks,

David

    Some things to consider.

    .

    1. At age 41 you probably still have significant "accommodation" in your eye. That is the ability of the eye to change the shape of the natural lens to focus on things that are closer to you. That is most likely what is giving you reading vision, unless of course you are using progressive lenses in your eyeglasses. When you replace the natural lens with and IOL you lose this ability to change the power of the lens. It is fixed if you get a monofocal lens. If the lens is selected to give you 20/20 distance vision you will not be able to read close up. You can however use reading glasses to solve that problem.
    2. The PanOptix uses some optical tricks to give you good focus at close, intermediate, and distance. There are some potential optical side effects from using this type of lens. I would suggest doing some extensive research to determine if you are likely to be ok with these issues or not. Not everyone is happy with this type of lens.
    3. Keep in mind that your current eyeglass prescription is correcting error in the shape of your cornea plus error in the shape of your lens. With cataract surgery the natural lens is removed, So that error will be automatically removed. The first step in a cataract surgery process is measuring the topography of your cornea. That will determine the power of the IOL needed.
    4. I was near sighted so I have no experience with the issues associated with a + lens if that is what it turns out to be. One of the issues with a negative lens is that it is thin and may not position well in the eye. Perhaps a + lens will position better as it should be thicker, but that is just a guess on my part. Some of the side effect issues associated with IOL are claimed to be caused by the lens position.

Awesome! Great information here, That is a good observation on + patients. I am still researching but i cant seem to find much information on results from people with farsightedness. Its strange to think about the ability to focus is completely lost and will never be back. Kinda scary!

i was near sighted since childhood so no experience with +

sorry you have cataracts so young - my own developed fast at 53. Are you still able to correct vision with glasses or contact lenses? If so hold off on surgery till vision can no longer be reasonably corrected. If you can try contact lenses to simulate monovision that would help you in deciding whether IOLs with mini monovision would better for you. Many find the trade off with multifocal IOLs or trifocals too much vs monofocal lenses and eith thise can get 2 of 3 distances very well with mini monovision setup. My own vision was too far gone to try that.

    Wishing you well

Thanks for your feedback. I'm still very apprehensive, am i being too cautious? Anyone have any experience with being farsighted and going with a multi focal lens that can give me an idea of how you like them now. Have your eyes adjusted well. Is it true you wont be able to focus naturally any more? What's it like not being able to focus?
