a dental filling fell out of my top molar but i didnt notice it until my dentist told me about it like a year later i think.  if i had gone to my dentist as soon as i discovered that the filling was missing, would they have been able to redo the filling so like that my molar wouldnt have cracked or not?????  i think that the molar cracked because too much time went by with the filling missing!  now my dentist has told me that a root canal treatment is unavoidable.  can a dentist please tell me.  rsvp.  thank you.

Hi Bill, sadly even root canal filled teeth will eventually crack. This is why it is extremely important to see a dentist very regularly. I know I have to as I suffer from 2 problems. I have Edhers-Danlos a genetic disease that affects the mouth and Sjögren's Symdrome. As a child and teen my dentist really didn't know what was wrong, he could see all my teeth were cleaned exceptionally well. I saw him every 3 months. Now at 68 despite I still have most as I have always been very keen to see my dentist at the first time of trouble.

ok i will explain everything in more detail.  i need to clear my conscience.  i had a filling done in 2004/5.  in 2012 i went to see my dentist and the filling was still there.  in 2013 after getting into an argument with my mother i forgot to go and see the dentist and didnt see her until 2014.  within that time gap of 2012 and 2014 since i dont know when exactly or even approximately the filling fell out!  well im sorry but i just dont know when it happened, sorry.  in 2014 my dentist told me that a filling had fallen out and was missing!  again since i honestly dont know when it fell out i cannot say how long my molar was without it????  i can only assume that MAYBE if i had gone to my dentist as soon as i noticed it was missing my molar might have not cracked but dont know if this would be fairly safe to say?????  my dentist tried several times redoing the filling and after i told her that my tooth felt sensitive she said that i need a root canal treatment because the problem is that my sensitivity is due to the fact that the filling is too deep because of a cracked molar.  i dont know if i had gone to see her right away after the filling fell out if the molar would have still been cracked or not?  if a filling falls out of a molar and one goes to the dentist right away, could a root canal treatment still be necessary or only if one year or more has gone by without the missing filling???  if i had gone to see my dentist right away literally after my filling fell out do you think that the molar would have still been cracked or do you think that it cracked because too much time went by with the missing filling????  25 million dollar question.  rsvp.  thank you.

Bill you are I think not only confusing yourself your confusing me and probably your dentist too! regular dental checks are exteemly important. As an adult you should see a dentist every year. In the UK there are NHS dentists. Their fees a reasonable. If a filling drops out you need to go immediately otherwise you risk the tooth decaying more. If you leave this there is a risk of abscess. If a tooth abscesses you have 2 choices to have it pulled out or root canal filled. Or you refuse to have the tooth root canal filled  then there is will be a risk that the root will crack. Many adults suffer cracked roots especially if the have neglected to deal with problems immediately. I am NOT a dentist so I suggest that you see your dentist and talk over your concerns

ok im sorry but i wasnt trying to be arrogant about this.  lets not assume anything anymore!  had i gone to the dentist right away, would have dental abscess taken place or not or did it happen because i let like more than maybe a a year go by if the filling had already fallen out???  i know that youre not a dentist but can you please tell me what you think.  did dental abscess take place in my case because maybe too much time went by and the filling had already fallen out vs. redoing the filling right away after noticing it that it was missing????  can you please tell me because my dentist gives me ambigous answers to this problem!  rsvp.  thanks.

Bill yes to avoid a tooth decaying any further, IF a filling drops out, you MUST see a dentist at the earliest time. The longer the tooth remains unprotected the greater the degree of decay which will ultimately end in an abscess. Any tooth that has a slight fissure in it, is at risk. If you have normal saliva that helps to protect your teeth regular dental check ups are essential to keep your mouth and indeed your whole body healthy.

so basically what youre saying is that if i had gone to the dentist right away and had the filling done i wouldnt need a root canal done then?  am i right????  rsvp.

fine let me ask you this then, what do you think might have made the filling fall out in the first place?  a faulty job by the dentist who did it?????  also, even if i had gone to the dentist right away, how do i know that she might not have done more drilling because from what i understand even when a filling falls out the first time i think that dentists do a little bit more drilling before they actually redo the filling even if it got caught just in time...................  rsvp.

Bill I don't know what you think you are achieving by this conversation. Of course a dentist will need to drill further. The filling fell out because over time the saliva, which is a natural disinfectant, may diminish as we all age, then if you don't brush properly 2 x day for at least 2 minutes. Preferably with an electric toothbrush, using floss or interdental brushes and fluoride toothpaste. If you eat sweetened food, acidic food, drink alcohol, sweetened drinks your teeth will be eroded. Once a minute crack appears between the filling and the tooth. This enlarges as bacteria get in, this causes the the crack to widen enough for the filling to fall out. Upon your next visit the dentist will need to remove that portion of now decayed pulp before replacing the hole with another filling. iF as you did, left the tooth open to all this then of course the bacteria will go down to the roots and cause an abscess. If the root canal is bent, many are, especially those with Elhers Danlos, in time the root will crack. So as I have said YOU need to take control of YOUR own oral hygiene, if you don't your teeth will decay. You cannot blame a dentist, for your lack of care.

im sorry if i have offended you in anyway!  i just need to be certain that im trying to do everything possible to take care of my teeth....  when you said that a dentist will need to drill further, does this apply to even if i had gone to the dentist right away as soon as i noticed that the filling had fallen out?  rsvp.

but even if i went to the dentist right away and she had to drill more where the filling fell out, what does that mean?  if by drilling more in the same exact spot, would that have reached the nerve???  rsvp.
