    Hello Yehyeh,

Helen will be a good person to hear from as she has been in your situation.  I have not reached that point yet. My GFR is currently 22% and I'm having intracenous iron for CKD related anaemia and injecting EPO.  Alll I can say is that at each new stage, I have been worried, but none of these things has turned out to be as frightening as you think. Many people on the forum are on dialysis and coping well with the changes it makes to your life.  I wish you all good luck.

    Hi,

I would agree with what Lyn has said.  Its scary when you get to the next bit as you don't know what to expect, but like Lyn has said it is never as bad as you think its going to be.  Embrace dialysis there is nothing you can do about it, its happening.  Treat it as your'e friend its going to be keeping you alive!.  Once you get used to it, it becomes part of normal life like brushing your teeth or going to work.  After a while you don't notice it that much its just what you do.  Good luck with your appointment next month you will be fine.

Helen I am in stage 3 now and I am very worried and depressed. You seem to be a very positive person to talk to. I already have foam in my urine and I am freaking out. Any advice?

      Hello Janet,

Can I ask what the reason is for your CKD, what caused it.  The reason I ask is depending on the cause you may not move from stage 3. I know a lot of people who have remained at stage 3 and never progressed, or if you are going to progress it make take a very long time, I also know a lot of people who have been in stage year for over 5 years and are still there. Its easy to say try not to worry this wont help your blood pressure thus not helping your kidneys.  My advice would be don't change anything ie your diet unless you are specifically told to do so by your dr or dietician its dangerous, don't believe everything your read online again somethings are dangerous. Do avoid taking ibuprfen and the like, avoid salt (especially loe salt) and processed foods (the only way you will do this is make it yourself, you know whats in it then) and maintain a healthy blood pressure under 130/70 (this is classed as pre high bp but ok for us CKD people) also there is no magic potion or cure and a lot of herbal things interfere with other meds so I would avoid them too, there is no magic way out of this, if there was there wouldn't be so many people with it. Stay active even if its only walking you are comfortable with, 30 mins a day isn't too much to fit into a day and all helps. I can't say you will be fine as I wouldn't lie to you but you will get through things, not easy at times but you will do it smile

      Hi Janet,

Helen is correct.  There are enormous numbers of people at Stage 3 who will not progress any further (about two thirds if I am correct) as kidneys do deteriorate with age and many young people have less than 100% GFR without ever having any symptoms at all. I was in Stage 3 for many years and although I'm now in Stage 4, I am quite well.  Try not to worry as anxiety can have really bad effects on your health.  All of Helen's advice is sound. You don't have to make too many changes to your diet to keep healthy.  I hope things go well with you.

I have diabetes and high blood pressure, both under control now. I have been drinking alot of water especially sparkling water. Is sparkling water safe to drink with ckd? I do have foam in my urine and it scares me. The doctor did not put me on any diet, but I watch what I eat now, pretty much starving myself. I eat chicken and turkey mostly. Please advise

      Hi,

Low salt is something that claims to be low in sodium but its not good. Ah so your CKD will be down to you being diabetic.  My brother is type one and he is stage 3 has been that for years.  I have Alports syndrome a really rare genetic disorder.  You need to eat properly if you are insulin medicalted by not eating you will be at risk of not conrolling your diabities correctly.  You don't need to be on a special diet, you need to eat woman smile.  You can eat normally so all your meats, fruit, vegs, potaoes, rice and pasta.  If you make the food yourself you know what is in it. Make home made soups, have salads with ham, chicken, prawns etc.  You can eat what you like. Just avoid what I have already explained, oh if you are on BP meds avoid grapefruit in interacts with the BP meds for some reason no idea why but it does.  Your bloods will be monitored and the only time you will be advised to change your diet is if your potassium goes too high or your phosphate you will know about it if either of these things happen.  If you lower either of the above and your levels are in range you risk lowering them too much and the results are as bad as them being too high.  Potassium too low you will end up in hospital and phosphate too low you risk a comer so you see don't change tings unless your dr tells you to. I had high potassium before I was on dialysis and had to amend my diet under the strict supervision of my neph and a dietician, likewise me phosphate went to high so that was meds and diet.  You are a long way off these issues though.  What I would keep an eye on at this stage is iron levels and HB (red blood count) they can not always but can go a bit low around stage 3 you will know if this happens as you will feel tired and breathless.  Please don't starve yourself my lovely I promise you its fine to eat, so you have to promise that will do so please smile

Helen, I am type 2 diabetic for 17 years now. I am 2 meds for it. I was on Invokana and made them take me off of it, its bad for kidneys. I appreciate your answering my questions, do you mind if I use you as a support person, you and Lyn seen to be very helpful. One last thing for now, is it safe to drink carbonated water? It substitudes soda for me

      Hi Janet,

I looked at the National Kidney Organisation site and it says that carbonated water should be Ok for someone with Stage 3 CKD. Helen is right again- you should not be starving yourself.  You need dietary iron to keep healthy and there is absolutely no need to have a strict diet.  Enjoy your food and just avoid the obvious things like too much salt, fat and sugar. And try not to worry.  I know this last thing is hard but it won't improve your heath.  Stress does very bad things to the body.

Hello, yes of course I will be of support, but please rememerb your medical team must take 1st place of anything that is said on here.  I have been through it yes and had experience over many years but I am not medically trained nor to I claim to be so their advice must be taken fully on board.  Other than that I would be happy as I am sure Lyn would to chivvy you along on your journey, it really helps.
