Day Zero....

Hi all,

Happy to say it's done (about 9 hours or less ago now), I'm in recovery and can't sleep at all. Pain is pretty bad despite the infrequent morphine. I'm guessing this is par for course, but obviously knowing that sleep would aid recovery...

Anyhow, here we go, I suppose. I've got some meditation recordings to help me relax, so fingers crossed (since I can't cross anything else?!)

Best wishes to my fellow hippies

They should keep you comfortable feeling no pain. Tell the nurse to ask the dr to increase pain meds as needed. That is usually the order left by the surgeon. Also sleep meds can also be prescribed by the dr . I never slept after revision I itched so ferously from pain meds that all the topicals for skin and antihistamines they prescribed did not help. So glad it's over.

its the first few hours that you should be kept comfortable. Is there a team assigned to you to get you thru the first few days?

Many healing prayers sent sent your way . I know you will be up and walking by a day or two.

are you in the US or U.K. ?

Keep up with eating and ask for for protein shakes for energy for healing.

i can't believe your right from surgery on the internet. That a feat in itself?

Have re you seen your support team or PT team yet?

Keep posting. Many hippies here to help u thru .

    Gentle Hugs,

    Hopexxx

Caron, congrats on making it through surgery! I echo the others when I say to tell nurses/doctors that you need more pain relief. It should never be "bad". Ring for help right now, no matter what the time! They should be asking you what your pain levels are and be striving to help keep them low.

Good luck getting sleep. I am sorry to say that after my THR I spent 4 nights in the hospital, and never got more than 1 hour's sleep a day while there. When I got home, it went up to 5.- 6 hours a day in catnaps throughout the 24 hours. I had awful sleep, who knows why, and I recovered anyway.

Sending you all of my well wishes!

And yes, pain for the first couple of days is to be expected.

Keep up with the pain meds and stay positive.

I had my THR on Feb 9 and doing outpatient therapy.

First of all congrats BIG TIME.   Hope you are reading this tomorrow after much needed sleep.

I am new (surgery in 2 weeks) and have a question - does everyone take morphine after a THR?

      Hi Kendra

I think this is the case for best pain relief. However it made me violently sick so I had trammadol after that which suited me better.

    Caron,

So glad your surgery is completed! Just remember they don't want you to sleep in recovery....their goal is to get you moving.

Take your meds, do your exercises, listen to your mediationsite, elevate, and ICE, ICE, ICE!

    Hi Caron,

Congratulations indeed -- I hope you were able to have some hours of sleep -

They really should give you stronger meds if you are in so much pain ..

to be honest, I did not get them ... for some reason the hospital ( I am in Holland) was not giving any morphine anymore and meds were giving with prescribed hours in between -

with 2nd THR more or less the same, but then morphine was given again, only not when I asked for it -

There is a high incidence of over-medicating, so they are careful ...

Also, nurses cannot just give you stronger or different medication .. they have to get authorization from the anesthesiologist or surgeon -

Listening to meditation tapes and perhaps pain reducing hypnotherapy will certainly help ...

I am sure they will get you out of bed today -

please let us know how you are getting on okay

    big warm hug

    Hi Caron,

So sorry to hear that you are in so much pain 9 hours after the surgery.  This is not at all par for the course!  We do not live in the middle ages and there is plenty of different pain meds out there.  Unless of course that you are one of the few who can't take pain meds.  Hopefully that's not the case!

Make sure that your specialist knows that you are in pain.  He/she should be able to provide something for you for the first few weeks while your body in recovering.

Wishing you the very best on your recovery!

Also, make sure that you elevate your legs and apply ice packs to the surrounding area.  This will help to reduce inflamation and pain.

Congratulations. The worst is over and you will get to feeling better over time. In my case the worst period was the first 2 weeks. Just follow instructions, take your mess and do your exercises. It can take up to one year to totally heal. I am a bit over a year and forget I had it.
