Dentist would not extract the tooth? Still in pain.

Hello. I have a tooth that's broken below the gum line & it's been like this for months. On Saturday it started giving me some pain & I phoned the emergency dentist. I went last night expecting him to just pull it out & he didn't. He said something about its infected around the tooth in the palate and gave me a 5 day course of amoxicillin & go back in 5 to 7 days. I have to take 3 caps 3 times per day. I have taken 4 so far & I am still in agony. Is this normal? Why could he not just pull the tooth out?

    Trust your Dentist!

It is entirely correct that you have antibiotics BEFOREyou have an infected tooth pulled.

I hope the pain subsides soon but if it doesn’t, go back and see him again.

Make sure you complete the course of antibiotics and take them at regular intervals (as directed) and that you’re drinking enough too.  Are you taking any painkillers??

Good luck and please let us know how you get on.

    Hi,

The tooth definitely needs to to be pulled if it is broken beneath the gum line - not sure why it wasn’t before the pain began.

But if it’s infected, it’s common to treat the infection first and when that calms down, then remove the tooth.  That applies to any dental procedure.  I asked the same question myself.
