Diagnosed IBS after suspected gallstones was clear..

Hi Everyone.

At the begining of this year i started having severe pains on the right side of my body under my ribs and also in my right shoulder with very bad upset tummy. it was so bad that i had to take 1 weeks off away from work. My doctor was sure i had gallstones as the pains were exactly where the liver is located but scans and tests all came back clear, however a stool sample picked up "first stages of IBS" as my doctor explained to me and prescribed Buscopan tablets. I have started getting those pains again and they are so so painful. has anyone had the same??

Strange from stool sample he can deduce IBS.

IBS usually is diagnosed when all tests come back negative so that they assume as nothing else is wrong it must be IBS.

Stool tests usually are there for occult blood. A bacteria infection. He pyrolysis ( spelt so wrong)

    IBD/Crohns

I assume that you were negative an all the hence the IBS diagnosis

Try a simple fibre diet or FODMAP diet.

I found peppermint tea and peppermit oil capsules very helpful

Stool tests are used to detect occult blood, h pylori and infammation that could suggest IBD.  IBS is diagnosed when everything else has been ruled out.

I take Buscopan for IBS which reduces my pain but does not get rid of it entirely.  Antispasmodics tend only to reduce pain.  IBS pain can either be constant or will come and go.   Mine started as constant, very bad pain now I have very mild pain that cones and goes or long periods of no pain.

It sounds like you are having an IBS flare up. If Buscopan doesn't suit you, ask your doctor for another IBS medication.  I tried Mebeverine which made me worse but Buscopan was better.

Hello, thank you for your replies.

I am looking at the letter my GP sent to my Employer and he has written that an ultrasound scan and stool tests suggest IBS.

He advised me to follow the FODMAP which I have been doing since January but it hasnt seemed to do much.

My GP has also written on my letter that in his opinion, IBS, anxiety with depression (all of which i suffer from) could be a DDA disability. I'm not sure what this means either so I am going to book an appiontment to find out.

At the moment my IBS is very bad, nothing is helping and the pains under my ribs on the right hand side (where the liver is located) are very very bad. the pain is constant with stabbing pains which come and go, this is what i was having at the start of the year which is what made my GP belive it was gallstones. I just dont know what to do. I had tests done at the start of the year which all came back clear and i dont want to waste my GP's time or have to take time off work especially as my employer is very difficult but I need to get this sorted out.

?Has anyone else experienced any of this??

All the visits to your doctor, waiting for tests, undergoing them and waiting for the results is very stressful especially when they are clear and initially give you no answers.  Worry about wasting your doctor's time, taking time off work and facing an unemployer who is difficult, will also make your symptoms worse.

Don't worry about your IBS diagnosis.  Go back to your doctor and say that Fodmap has not helped much and see what else can be suggested.
