Diagnosed with IBS but not convinced.

I’m 16 and I’ve been suffering from what the doctors say is IBS since October 2017. I had 2 weeks in October/November where I felt really nauseous 24/7 and could barely get out of bed, I went to the doctor and they sent me to hospital because they thought it was my appendix as I had tenderness there and all the symptoms of it. I had a ultrasound and it came back clear and I went home. To my surprise all the symptoms suddenly stopped. In May this year it started up again, I got laryngitis while sitting my exams so I put all my symptoms down to that but it persisted and the throat symptoms stopped. I’m now still struggling in August so it’s been 4 months since the symptoms came about again but now I have a tender right side and have a cramping/sharp pain there which I’ve had for about a week and a half it doesn’t seem to be getting worse but it also doesn’t seem to be getting better. The doctor said I have IBS but I’m really not convinced as the tablets I’ve tried do not work and I don’t experience very bad cramping unless it’s on the right side, I’m also constantly bloated and it doesn’t go down and I still feel ill no matter what I eat, it really doesn’t make a difference, I also get very dizzy and exhausted even though I’m a good sleeper normally. I’ve also had constipation for about 3 weeks on and off with diarrhoea aswell occasionally and something unusual has happened, I’m on the contraceptive pill for my heavy periods which I’ve settled into normally with no problems but for some reason my periods are lasting for 2 weeks at a time and as I speak I’ve been ‘on’ for 4 weeks, none of it has been red blood it’s all brown and black (TMI I know) but I’m pretty sure all of these symptoms and how they’re occurring do not correlate with IBS so I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions or knew what could possibly be causing all of this?? I’m not in agony with the pain but it’s completely put my life on hold as I’m terrified to leave the house because of it.

Sounds very like IBS to me if everything else has been excluded. Does the pain move about? Bloating, nausea and change of bowel habit are key IBS symptoms.

IBS can cause periods to feel more painful. The pill is not the best thing to be taking because it can disturb your hormones.  Has endometriosis been ruled out?

Hi, when my youngest daughter was your age, she was having similar symptoms to you, and we thought the same, that it could be her appendix.  She was admitted to hospital by her doctor and they ruled out her appendix, but did further tests and scans and it turned out to be Poly cystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). Whilst I’m not trying to worry you, because it may simply be IBS, but to be sure I would go back to the doctor and give him/her a full list of your symptoms (including those to do with your monthly period) and see if they can get you to be referred to a specialist as it can cause infertility (which obviously may be more of a concern as you get older).

When I went to hospital they only did a ultrasound and bloods then sent me home. Just a question did your daughter have more tests done than just what I have had?

They can do ultrasounds on various parts of the body, which part was yours done on? It was about 12 years ago, so I can’t remember all the tests they did, but she was kept in for a couple of days while they did them and was then referred to a consultant when they got the results, which showed she had PCOS.

Mine was done on my lower abdomen but nothing seemed to show up, I’ve just come back from the hospital today as my gp referred me as I had a high temp and very fast bpm but when I got to the hospital they ruled out appendicitis for the second time and gave me some pain meds which helped a bit, I’m going back to my gp on Monday to ask if I could possibly have something wrong with my ovaries. It’s been a nightmare so far but I’m going to carry on being persistent with them until they find the cause.

Yes, I think you should! Pester power works eventually. If it is PCOS you need to know, but regardless of that, you need to find out what it is.

Hello! So many symptoms you have there.. Bloating, constipation and diarrhea and alternating them. IBS is a symptoms, not a cause. I`m so sorry for your frequent episodes of pain and discomfort. Not to mention embarrassing moments.

I think there is something in your intestines that causes these painful symptoms. Diarrhea is a good sign because in this way, our body is trying to eliminate something bad inside the intestines. These bad things are usually Viruses and Bacteria like: HELYOBACTER and GIARDIA.

It is so easy to get them. In some places it is called: "The lllness of dirty hands". We can get it from pets easily.

I think you should go and take some medical examination (Blood Tests, Urine test and Stool test). In this way, you can see if you are positive for viruses or bacteria.

The treatment is simple - 10 days of antibiotics or other similar medicine.

I used to have Helyobacter and Giardia and have some of your symptoms, but usually way worse. It so difficult to get rid of them (10 days of antibiotics, medical examination, 7 days of other medicine, medical examination, 7 days of medicine, medical examination, boiled underwear, clean bed sheets.... etc). So demanding and stressful.

    I hope this was helpful.

Hi, I’ve had bloods and a stool sample done aswell as a urine test recently so I’m pretty sure it wouldn’t be anything like that but thank you for your concern and information.
