Diagnostic hip injection

Posted , 13 users are following.

I had a diagnostic injection in left hip today. Blimey O'Riley (whoever that was ) it was bloomin painful!

Is it wrong of me to pray for a positive response so it is definitely my hip causing pain and not my spine??

I have to keep a pain diary now for when i go back in 6wks.

I never had a diagnostic injection either (whatever that is)?  I was referred by my gp to a consultant who did xrays to determine whether it was spine or hips. They found it was hips -  the left was bad and the right one worse, bone on bone. I also had an EMI a month later, then saw the hip consultant in October last year. My first hip op was in January and I had my second in October this year as it had significantly deteriorated since last year.  I am now 7 weeks post (2nd) op and doing well. smile

Let us know how you get on,

    Take care

Hi Linnet, it's great to hear your doing well and I hope you continue to thrive, hope you don't mind me asking like you I am bone on bone on both hips, I have been declined an op over the last 4 years for various reasons age I'm now 62,weight I'm still 3 stones over and more importantly my spine needs a complex op involving 5 levels which has definitely been refused, I'm now at the point where I can barely walk at all and have not worked for 6 months my question is did you feel any benefit after having the first hip replaced and was you more mobile. I'm finally having mine done in June. X

I had the injection in my left hip as well. It helped a little bit. Two months later I had my hip replacement. Best of luck to you!

Angela, my rhemologist suggested the same injection to me, so I asked her how it worked, and she said something about injecting into the cartledge, so I got into her and said what cartledge, even I can see on the x-ray that I'm bone on bone. She backed down and said if i felt that way we would pass. So much for her belief it would help me. Sorry that they caused you so much pain. I am very proactive in my own care, and do not just allow Dr's to just walk all over me, after some very poor care, I have learned the hard way, they have to explain to me why the procedure will help or not, I also have researched from medical papers available on the internet.

Thanks Lynn, I did choose the option of having this diagnostic inj because my spine has severe degenerative disease so it complicates pin pointing the site of pain.

The surgeon is more than willing to operate if needed and has already said he has taken my history, pain/hip scores and daily impact into consideration before this today.

I want confirmation too rather than undergo major surgery with a long recovery that may not benefit me especially as i am only 53 and work full time.

Angela - very happy that it was with your agreement, I feel from reading this forum, too many get bulldozed into agreeing with the Dr, when they have doubts.

I had the injection, doctor said it may or may not help my choice to try but I also know insurance companies want you to try everything before approving surgery. I got a copy of his report and he stated I tried all possible treatments, I was bone on bone. Are you in US?

      No I am UK.

But I have been told this is purely to pinpoint the majority of my troubles are from the hip rather than from my rubbish spine 😜

The surgeon is clear that any benefit is only short term but helps clarify things and adds to evidence from the xrays and my history.

Any treatment doses of injections with steroids are as he says only a temporary fix plus would prevent any surgery for 12mths.

He was adamant that if i had positive diagnostic response he could do hip replacement asap.

I had one 3 months ago. Your doctor probably didn't use a pain numbing med as my injection did not hurt at all and they injected a numbing med before the steroid. I felt a slight "filling" in the joint and he put in more numb stuff. If you pray, do it. What can it hurt? Since i still dont have pain, my pain diary wasnt filled in. Good luck

You were lucky Debbi, I had it done the first shot was numbing but when he went through the capsel, man it hurt bad for a little bit but then the next numbing took affect. Made me tense and grit my teeth......

It had local aneasthetic introduced through out the procedure when introducing the needles but it was painful until the steroid and bolus of whatever else he used was done.

It was painful in all the places i get most pain plus around the back of my buttock if you get what i mean??

    Hi Angela,

That is tough, sweetheart - Why would it be wrong to pray? having said this, one thing to remember is to surrender the answer to the Universe, God, all there is ..

    sending you light and healing

    and a big warm hug
