Since Feb, I've had burning and stabbing in my left abdomen, just inside my pelvic bone. I'm also exhausted and queasy. I've been very close to being sick a few times. Poos range from pellets to the runs. I'm weak and wobbly and stagger sometimes. I also have referred pain down the front of my left leg which I'm sure comes from the pain in my abdomen. I've been treated for colitis which I get occasionally but with bleeding. No bleeding this time and feels different. Steroid tabs and enemas have had no effect. As it feels different, could it be diverticulitis or osis?

Many thanks all. I'll just have to be patient and hope the appointment is set before I go to France. Though knowing one way or another won't really help the sickness. Will have to Google diets, but fibre is out. Hope I can get a private appointment in a few days, if the cover allows it.

Hi, you shouldn't have a colonoscopy while you have diverticulitis, it should be confirmed by a CT scan then followed up by a colonoscopy 8 weeks later , this is how mine was handled. I am in the US and so thankful for our medical care. I called my doctor's office in the morning was seen 2 hours later and was sent for a CT scan that afternoon to confirm diverticulitis and was on antibiotics the next day. After a liquid diet for a few days then a low fiber diet for a couple of weeks I was back to my regular diet with no restricition that was in January. Recovery to when I felt like myself again was about 5 weeks. I am happy to report I am feeling fine. Don't self-diagnois and insist on the needed tests.

Hi Linda
Treatment in the US is very different to treatment here in the UK. In some ways yours is better as it is much quicker and cuts out the waiting and anxiety. However, if it is an emergency you will get admitted and everything done in the hospital.
But normally the procedure is to go to the doctor, be told it is probably diverticulitis, get antibiotics and told to come back in 8 weeks if still in pain. Then you can get referred. This is the official procedure. I was lucky and got an appointment in 2 weeks under the emergency suspected cancer protocol, but I have heard of some people waiting over 6 months. The CT Scan is only carried out if the colonoscopy is unsuccessful, due, I was told, to the radiation risk. This is exactly what happened to me. As Valkyrie is UK based this is what will probably happen. I presume the 8 week wait between medication and referral is to allow the diverticulitis to clear, before the colonoscopy. Otherwise the aftercare is exactly the same. I hear in some countries, they don't even prescribe antibiotics, just diet. I'm glad I don't live there!!!

I was like you I only waited 2 weeks and the dr who did the colonoscopy told me after he did it that I had diverticula. I had a bad flare up at Christmas and got in at the Drs straight away and was given antibiotics. I thought I was having a flare up 2 weeks ago and was given antibiotics but it was just a upset stomach so haven't taken them. I still have them just in case I need them. All except one dr at my surgery are sympathetic to me and always listen to me

Thanks all. My doc has given me antibiotics pending the colonoscopy in case it is DD. I hope it works. I'm so miserable. It's expecially upsetting as my daughter is due for her A Levels next month and I'm too exhausted to give her all the support she needs. My poor hubby is having to take the strain. Wish me luck!

The antibiotics will clear it up, but be aware that they can have side effects for some people. I find that they make me feel sick and dizzy, but they do the job and that's what is important. Hoping you feel better soon.
