Do I have herpes or is it something else?

Hi,

Without any prior sexual interaction, 8-9 days ago I woke up at night and had very painful urination. Nothing unsual in color or anything, just hurt very bad. I was up much of the night with the feeling that I had to go again, even when only drops came out. 2 days later (7 days ago from today) I recieved oral sex from someone who I'm not completely 100% positive is clean. Throughout the 7 days since, there is an on-and-off burning sensation on the tip of my penis that is very mild and doesn't hurt when I urinate. But that mild burning sensation was present before I received any oral sex. Could this be genital herpes though? I am confused because I had that burning sensation in tip of my penis before I engaged in any sexual behavior. Now I am freaking myself out. There are no other obvious symptoms, no discharge, blisters or anything like that. I read an article 2 days ago about tingling sensations that are precursors to a breakout, and since then I've felt tingling sensations not just in my genital region but all over body. Is this just me freaking myself out? Help! Also, I want to get tested and plan on doing so, but is it too early? My sexual encounter was 7 days ago--should I wait to get tested? Any help woudl be appreciated--super stressed out!

Best thing to do is wait and get tested. Wait for 3 months to pass and then go for an igg specific test. If in the meantime you were to get blisters then have the doctor swab them but make sure the doctor does a type specific swab.

3 months is a while to be unsure though. Is there a test I can do within the next week that could tell me with some accuracy?

Unfortunately, no. In the absence of lesions to swab, you need to wait 3+ months to test for HSV IgG antibodies (not IgM; unreliable and not recommended). Just like older HIV tests, before the introduction of more rapid tests.

You are freaking yourself out. Firstly, you only noticed major tingling after reading about it. Secondly, herpes tingling is not all over (only below the belt), and only half of carriers actually experience any tingling at all. I get zero tingling, for example.

Thirdly, if you've never had sexual relations of any kind, then it's *extremely* unlikely that you'd have either herpes type on your genitals. In fact, it's near-impossible. Last but not least, these symptoms you had existed before you received oral sex for the first time. They are worth getting checked out, but not for herpes.

Thanks for the quick feedback. I think it's all in my head. I still feel the tingling sensations, but all over my body. They're going away though. No more painful urination. I've had sexual relations before--but many months ago and with someone who I'm sure is clean.
