Doctor says I may not have it, however I am not sure?

Hello,

I slept with a man with genital herpes back in April. He told me a week in advance before we actually had sex and he had no outbreak and was taking medication at the time. We had sex only twice. I take an STF test a month later to make sure (no outbreaks) and it comes out negative. I take another for my new boyfriend a month later and it came out negative. Now, I took a third test when my now ex boyfriend said he has genital herpes. I am not sure if it came out positive or negative but from my understanding it was positive. So I went to the doctors to grab a prescription for it and he denied me medicine saying I probabaly don't have it since I've never had an outbreak. Thoughts? Please and thank you.

Which type of test did you have done: IgG, IgM, other? Also, are you saying that the guy in April *and* your subsequent bf (who is now your ex) both have herpes? Gosh, what are the odds of that?! Didn't your bf also test the same time as you? It is possible to have herpes without symptoms, but you also may not have it, so should check by the IgG antibody test at 3 months from last sexual contact with your bf.

The only widely available blood test of any use in confirming herpes is the IgG antibody test. Not IgM, not the pcr blood test. You should find out the type of tests you had done previously and ensure any future ones are IgG.

The urine test is not commonly used for herpes, so I can't comment, but presumably it's only good if you're shedding at the time (which you may or may not be, if not having an outbreak).

Best to confirm your status before asking for or taking meds.

No reason to feel sad! Not having had an outbreak is a potentially good thing/sign. You just need to confirm that your past tests were IgG and make sure that's what you test for going forward in the absence of visible symptoms.
