Hi Susan I think everybody is different mine started in Aug last year I'm in a flare up that has not stopped in 6 weeks now and I've been off work for two weeks might be another week yet but to be honest I'm thinking of packing in work as I'm becoming unreliable due to this illness I can deal with most of the symptoms but the dizziness and Nessa is something else add a bit feeling completely drained is a non starters

Having said that my mate Sis is worse hers has been going for 6 months so I can't really tell you as you can see its different for each of us.

Sorry I'm not much help but I wish you well real soon

      Hi

I wonder if Allbran is a bit fierce for your insides.  I know fibre is good, but soluble rather than insoluble.  I personally cannot take anything with gluten or wheat and know that things like Fruit n Fibre and Bran Flakes are full of wheat, so instead I have porridge - the rolled oats kind, not the processed instant kind.  I soak them overnight with water, sweetener and a dessertspoon of powdered skimmed milk.  I cook then tart them up with a little bit of cinammon or fruit like apple puree or mashed banana.  Bethia has covered most of the eating suggestions.

Like Bethia a recent flare started in August, and it was December before I was mostly free of pain.  I watch my diet carefully, avoiding foods I know are triggers.  I also take pure aloe vera juice, probiotic drinks and Fybogel to aid the "throughput", shall we say!!  I then had another flare at the end of January but got on top of this real quick.

I have some days now when I am completely pain free, and others when I have niggles - low left, below tummy button and occasionally right side.  My bowel habits have changed though, to 4 - 6 times a day.  I am also susceptible to bladder infections and thrush now, although I do my best to keep clean.  I've made the conscious decision to get on with life, making sure I have pain killers and spare pants with me, and know the location of the nearest loo!!

I am lucky to be retired, so don't have a work committment, but I was a worker for 10 years after first being diagnosed.  I can still recall dashing to A&E as I was passing blood when first diagnosed, then in the 4 weeks afterwards being doubled up, standing by the photocopier, or trying not to squirm in my chair.  But it did slowly ease, and I was able to continue with competitive sport and do everything I normally did.  Unfortunately I have heard it can take months for the insides to heal, depending on the extent and location of the infection.  I hope your symptoms ease and you start to feel better soon.

Morning Susan my doctor gave me alverine 60 mg tablets I take two three times a day when I first had them to me they were like a miracle tablets because they took nearly all my symptoms away I also take fybogel, paracetamol smelling salts and a hot water bottle I also find peppermint tea good to settle the tummy, ginger tea best but I can't stand the taste but if you need something stronger I go for peppermint capsules but only take them in a flare up but never take them before bed, you can get them at chemist and they do work and don't forget your probitics I think your find its a case of trial and error until you find what works for you best, I'm waiting for a hospital appointment at moment to see a specialist should be interesting to see where it go from their, I hate this big D it sure puts the brakes on a lot of things I just try working through it but it don't mean it always work

I know about the eating thing, for me my trigger was tomatoes then spicy food was added to my list

Don't eat any nuts or seeds of any kind as these will get trapped in your intestine pockets that will get you an infection, cut seeds out of cucumber apples in fact anything with seeds including seeded bread the best advice I can give you here is to keep a food diary in the long run it will save you a llot of trouble write down your food wait 2 hrs if something starts twinging you will know its an item on plate then you you will have to work out which one it was and put it on your black list,

Thankyou I will get some today. What do you think of fibregel I have some from the dr but not started it yet x

I have been prescribed Fybogel by my doctor for 16 years.  It is a soluble fibre which is mixed with about 12 fl oz water and chugged down quickly before it thickens.  It is supposed to thicken in the tummy and it bulks and softens the stool, making it easier to pass.  No more straining bullets!  It also acts as a mild laxative and keeps me regular each morning like clockwork, after being up an hour.  I also go several times more during the day, but I actually have Diverticular Disease, which is an abnormal thickened twisted bowel with spasms, rather than just Diverticulitis or Diverticulosis.  I am happy that my insides are well emptied each day - nothing to get trapped and cause infection.  Most people seem to get benefit from it after a few days, although some have reported constipation.  I would say give it a week for your insides to adjust - it's not an instant miracle worker!
