Doing too much post TKR

Rehab has been going well recently so I decided to step it up a notch. I walked two miles with my dog without my stick( I took it just in case) that was in the morning and felt OK, ligaments were just a bit sore but apart from that nothing else. In the afternoon I went to "knee school" an hour of exercise which involves strength, balance and range of movement exercises. Still everything fine after that but then we did the dreaded Christmas shop!! I took my stick for this but suffered when I got home, limping badly and knee swelling. So now I know what too much is 😂. On a positive note after a quiet day I'm back to where I was, range of movement continues to improve, can sit on my motorbike now with feet comfortably on the foot pegs, just hurts a bit inside the knee when moving gear shifter up and down. I can also pedal my bike which I have on a turbo trainer and I e got the seat lower than I had before the op, still a bit uncomfortable inside the knee joint which I think is just scar tissue so I'm nearly there. I'm just going to enjoy Christmas and new year and then I can finally think about returning to work on phase return.

wishing all my fellow "knee warriors" a happy Christmas and hopefully pain free 2018 😘

Yep, you over did it in style! The morning walk would have been enough! However it's good to get a sense of where you are.. great news, sounds like things are falling into place...

Are you around 3 or 4 months post op now? Can't remember!

Things really improve a lot I think for most around this time.

    Great news! ?

I have this dreaded flu virus I think, hence laying around in bed a lot for the last few days. Kind of brings back memories of the early weeks of my TKR, but no pain of course!

Happy Christmas, and it will be a great new year!

Oh Jenny that's not good having flu over Christmas. I've missed out on the flu jab this year due to having this op. Being frontline staff who come in to contact with flu infested patients so we all get the jab. Yes I'm just over 13 weeks now but yes I'm noticing bigger changes now, which is all good. I'm sort of looking forward to getting back to work now and finally enjoying this new knee x

Feels to me its so hard to know we are doing too much till its too late. Because this time I felt my TKR was much better than the first I feel I too maybe pushed it too far,  had an awful 24 hours leg aching like made, muscles are so tight virtually going into full blown cramp, heat defo eases it but nothing improves it. Resting it is making it worse, any ideas? Knee isn't particularly that swollen luckily and not that much bigger than my other one, its the muscles which are now killing me, cant get any improvement, at two weeks post op more new bruising has appeared this evening, maybe this is linked too?

You're only 2 weeks post op?? No wonder it's hurting get your feet up and relax. I'm over 3 months down the line at two weeks I was just sleeping and hobbling to the toilet x

Finding it difficult to do nothing.... feel generally fit again, except now of course sad

Last time I was fit for nothing.....for weeks.....hard lesson to learn....but as per usual learnt the hard one...

Look you've been through it before so you know it's a long slog of a journey so don't rush it. Just relax and be patient and keep up with your range of movement exercises. I'm hoping I don't have to go through anything like this again for a considerable amount of time. It's the hardest thing I've ever had to deal with but I just believe what doesn't kill you makes you stronger😂 So just behave yourself and be patient 😘

At 5 weeks, I went for a "walk in the mall" with my daughter.  After experiencing my "Balloon Knee" that night, I checked my fit bit...8,200+ steps!!!  Started tracking my steps every day...never happened again.  By 8 months, I was doing 11,000+ steps (5 miles) with no adverse effects.  We ALL get the swelling; some don't learn from it.

There's a delicate balance between extending your capabilities and "going over the line"...  Listen to your knee...

    Hi Sue,

Sounds like you are making progress. Am really pleased for you. How’s the bend going?

I’m making very slow progress. Am on 70 degrees. I have until early jan to get to 90 otherwise it’s an MUA. On positive I’m in no pain unless I try to bend further than I can or stand to long.

It’s positive to hear everyone journey

I'm not sure what my bend is exactly depends who is measuring it. I've put a bit of tape on my carpet and marked out what my bend should be by the position my foot is on the tape. I can get it back to 100 comfortably on my own and 110 if I force it back. Physios have measured it at 85 so there is a bit of a difference. I'm happy as long as I can ride my bike and my motorbike I didn't have a brilliant flexion before my TKR. I will have to see what my consultant thinks on the 4th January, if he can improve my ROM by MUA then I'll be happy to have it done. As long as it improves my quality of life, if it doesn't then I'm not interested 😋

Sounds like you are doing very well. As you said, it’s more important that you can do the things you enjoy.  Hope all goes well on 4th. Def sounds like you are on right track. I managed to get to 75 today but I’m not using it at 75. I’m still more comfortable sitting with it raised and walk straight legged. Really did not realise what a journey this would be
