Posted , 9 users are following.

thanks for all info I've read since my surgery last week. I am seeking help as 1 week on from double bunion surgery with a lot of extra work on left foot to realign toes ( screws were mentioned as being used) . I am literally in agony every time my feet point downwards and unbearable if I stand! Taking Dihydrocodeine 3x day. Only relief Is complete elevation! Should the pain be this bad/ getting worse? Thinking about phoning hospital tomorrow....

Hi I had double done 8 and half weeks ago.

This is still very very early days for you hon. If someone told me what I can do at this stage of my op I would not have believed them. The first few weeks are painful and I was taking codeine and paracetamol and kept on taking them regardless of pain I felt. However I was off the by day 4. I kept me feet elevated and still do mostly and also had 2 pillows under my feet in bed. You must phine the hospital if only for peace of mind and double check. Hopefully what you are feeling is normal but please trust me.... I thought I was never gonna feel any recovery but how wrong I was. I am virtually back to normal. Still walking a little gingerly but absolutely fine pottering around the house. What you don't get told is you do need to be patient. Do as you are told by your surgeon and I am sure you will reap the benefits. Good luck x

Lovely to get reply so quickly- 😊have now gone to bed and elevated as usual on 3 pillows- bit of relief just all over aching of feet now esp over top of foot! Guess having an off day as feel going backwards! Also hate the offloader shoe thing- instrument of torture! Have borrowed wheelchair but have to put feet up as hanging down when sitting awful too! Staying in bed all morning tomorrow...

I too had both feet done, one more work than the other. Unfortunately it

can be part of recovery. Does it feel like blood rush? I had many a

twinges, week 9 post op now, and each week seemed to have thrown up

something new. All manageable with elevation and medicine though,

so do keep up with the meds even if you feel fine you'll probaby need to

take them for the first few weeks.

I'm in the UK and not familiar with your medication but I had codeine,

paracetamol and ibuprofen which was given to me by the hospital.

Thanks for reply 😊 kind of like blood rush more like throbbing, heavy, bursting! Literally have to stop and get feet up or cry! Feels quite desperate pain at the time.

Hi, it sounds like you've had the full works, no wonder you're in pain!  It depends on the amount of surgery as to how much pain you feel.  However phone the hospital as they can a) reassure you and b) give you advice about more effective pain relief. Always follow your gut instinct which you are doing.  Here's hoping some better pain killers and advice will do the trick.  Let us know how it goes.  Good luck!

Hi, I found ibuprofen and paracetamol worked for me. Take one and then the other an hour later - keeps things topped up longer. Try to elevate as much as possible. I only got up to toilet/wash for first 10 days. Believe me it does get better but check with your surgeon. Unfortunately you do sound perfectly normal . Some people have more pain than others.

By the way blood rush just doesn't cover it! More like foot about to drop off!

Hi Melinda. It's very early days and you've had a lot of surgery so the pain your feeling is only to be expected.  It will get better!  You need to keep your feet elevated and rest as much as you can for at least the first couple of weeks until you have your stitches out and the bandages come off.  I am 9 weeks post operative and things have got so much better but I still have days when I am in pain.

    Hi Melinda,

    So

sorry to hear you are suffering so much. I am just starting 9 days post of - bilateral MICA. I haven't had any severe pain but still continue to take my pain meds to be on the safe side. It really is early days and as everyone says so important to elevate. I over did it a bit yesterday ( not that much as I am only tottering around my small apartment!) but I did pay the price as my feet started to hurt a bit later in the day. Today I will be more diligent with my 10 mins only in every hour! I think you may be able to increase your pain meds but guess you had better check with the hospital first. Good luck!! 😊

Thanks for reply- there is definitely an improvement when elevated! It's so easy to do too much though, even simple things are such an effort aren't they? I elevate feet at night using 3 pillows and they feel better in the morning ( until I start walking around). Hope you have a better day 😊

Please don't worry too much, that's easy to say........... I'm three and half weeks from scarf op and it's been  hell.  I'm still on tablets,  the pain has been  the worse I've ever had, except.......... Kidney stones......  You feel it's never going to improve,  keep looking at this site and you will gain comfort from others,

These posts are helping a lot especially when on your back! GP coming today to check things out & maybe different medication.... Hang in there too  😊

I was in a similar place to you  at the 1 week stage.  My advice based on my own experience is, do as little as possible, even if that does mean spending the whole day in pjs with legs elevated and only doing bathroom and food hobbles.  And take the maximum pain relief at regular intervals ( I even took them part the way through the night in the early days).   I am at the 19 days stage now and have only been medication free for 2 days and am still taking it really easy doing very little and in between elevation.  I over did things over the week end and paid the price !

Keep our spirits up the Christmas movies will star in the TV soon !

That's reassuring to hear... Thank you! Got GP coming this morning to check and not leaving bed today.  Glad you reached turning point 😊

I think that the advice about taking regular medication is key. I took Paracetomol, Ibruprofen and codeine. I am not usually keen on taking too many pain killers but followed the advice that I was given and took them regularly for the first few weeks even when I had no pain. I was told at the hospital that it is easier to prevent the pain from developing than it is to get rid of it. Be kind to yourself and take them if necessary. I know that constipation is a potential side effect of codeine but this can be dealt with easier than horrible pain. Good luck

Sure that you will feel all the better for it. Been through enough without putting yourself through unnecessar pain! No point in that! Hope that you have a better night's sleep
