Down days on sertraline

I've posted about sertraline previously but this will be my last. I started 5 weeks ago and had awful side effects at first on 50mg but at week 4 I started to feel a bit better. But today I've felt unmotivated and just wanting to be in bed - I've also had spontaneous crying spells today for some reason and feeling really down. Has anyone else experienced this? I haven't been in school for 4 weeks and plan to go back on Monday which is why I don't know whether to increase my dose because I don't want the side effects back again!! Any advice? I also walked the shop earlier and felt really anxious and every small thing such as a car passing by felt overwhelming. Any reply will help! Thankssmile

    Hello Michael,

yes the efffects are all to familiar to me. after about 8 weeks i started to notice these effects wear off, but even now, the odd spell of tears crop up. i wouldn't up the dosage just yet. sit tight, and try to push through the next few weeks and see how you feel then.

Thanks for the reply! I think I'll give it another 3 weeks before I go back to the doctors. Going to try and do some excercise and meditate a little as well to give the tablets every chance of working!

Honestly sertraline works great for a lot of people so if it's working for you that's great! I was the same as you can see from my other posts. Every single side effect, miserable, depressed, and more anxious than I've ever been in my life. I was on 100mg for 3 weeks and I told my doctor I couldn't take it anymore. I'm on day 3 of weaning down and day 2 of a new med and I already feel 10x better. Yesterday I was actually able to eat for the first time in 4 weeks, my anxiety is slowly coming down, and I feel like I've got some sanity back.

I know it's horrible the way they make you feel at first which is why I'm reluctant to give up on sertraline and try another one as I'll get the really bad side effects back! Think I'll try stick it out for a bit. Thanks for the reply!!

I started 3 days ago on 25mg..know about loss of appetite, eating a little better today..never been on any med for depression, never needed it..my battle was severe insomnia..probably caused by depression..feeling a little better today, little fidgety..will increase to 50mg after 1 week..hope it will help

Yeah I had no appetite for 2 weeks! Which probably didn't help and I should've ate regardless of whether I was hungry. I was on 25 to start with as well because my main problem is anxiety but it hasn't taken full effect yet. Hope it works for you!

    HI Michael,

I am on sertraline 4 weeks now and the side effects have subsided but you will feel up and down this is what depression does to you. Yes I totally understand when you are out and the traffic almost frightens you. I was very scared crossing the road.  Your Seratonin levels in your brain need to come back up and level out that does take time.  There is an excellent book I would recommend called Depressive Illness the Curse of the Strong. The first chapter explains what happens to the brain when you are depressed. It will really help you.   I haven't been to school since December and I am going back after Easter. I hope this helps. I don't think you will get the side effects back,I think that is your fear coming out. Ixx
