I have recently found out that I have a 16cm by 12cm fibroid. Wanting to avoid surgery I am considering the uterine artery embolisation treatment. Has anyone else had this done and if so what was the outcome?

I am so happy to find a person like you, Lamypie, who has undergone embolization and NOT yet have had any children, and that is even younger than me. I am 37 years old. And I would really like to have a child... But in my current state… that isn’t possible... I have a fibroid of 10 cm and 2 smaller of 3-4 cm. The big one is in the back wall of the uterus and is the one that causes the most problems.
I've finished one treatment of the Esmya pills to get them to reduce in size, but it didn’t work on me… so now they want me to start my second treatment…I don’t know why that would work but…
My doctor wants to do a Myomectomy - open surgery on me. But I do not want that… I want to have an embolization. BUT because my doctor isn’t knowledgeable about this, she doesn’t have any information about it. I know there’s doctors in Sweden that preform this kind of surgery. I just haven’t found them yet.
But what did your doctor say about the possibilities of having children now that you have done this procedure?
And where was your fibroids located?
All the best.

I did Esmya but did not work for me either... If you really want to have it done it is performed by interventional radiologist and not a gynae consultant.
And oh Jane, I am sorry to hear that you went into early menopause! don't even know what to say to that!
They thought I might had ovarian failure after my procedure due to the nature of the arteries feeding the fibroid as I was in niche patients group who had a ovary artery feeding my fibroids so if the particles were to go the wrong way... It would have caused ovarian failure! They do not know this until they have you on the table either...

Ok. It sounds like we have/had the same type of fibroids. I also have the ones that pushes on my bladder and that misshapes my uterus.
Interesting that Esmya didn't help any of us...
I've figured out that it’s a interventional radiologist that does that procedure.
Really, REALLY hard choice to make, not knowing if the procedure will make you sterile/have ovarian failure...
I don’t really have any problems with my fibroids in terms of pain or such... They’re “just” in the way of me having kids... so... All the choices seems bad... Not the best statistics... Hate it...
But you will know in the nearest future how it worked out for you then?!
I really really hope it works out in the best possible way for you. Keeping my fingers crossed for you!

And Cookiesson I suppose in my mind why I choose this option as it was least invasive vs actual surgery... Therefore if I had to have the surgery I would have gone down all the least invasive options 1st. Even with the risk I still feel it was the right choice and I will know my MRI scan results soon. So will keep you posted.
On a diff note my hubby was also tested for sperm activity as well before having this op incase it wasn't just my issues we had to deal with... But he is all good and it only me who has the issues.
Really don't know what to think and say other than if you have Q's about procedure etc... Always happy to try and answer.
