epiretinal membrane in one eye

I have an epiretinal membrane in my dominant eye. How will this affect cataract surgery? Anyone have experience with this. I already know my choices are a monofocal lens - maybe or maybe not with an astigmatism correction. Have been putting this off. late 70's in age.

Just curious, what causes it?

An epiretinal membrane (ERM) is a condition where a very thin layer of scar tissue forms on the surface of the retina. The part of the eye affected by the epiretinal membrane is called the macula. Tends to happen as your eye ages.
caused by Posterior vitreous detachment: Separating of the gel that fills the back of the eye to the retina.

Hi Joan,

I would be very interested in your surgery for epiretinal membrane as well. I have had cataract surgery 2 1/2 years ago and recently diagnosed with epiretinal membeane in LE. Waiting to see a retina specialist.
thank you

As I understand it if you have ERM you will most likely have PVD as that's what usually causes it! And no there is no prevention as its simply the change in the Vitreous due to age according to my ophthalmologist! 😮
.
I might know more after 'seeing' my new Prof. (#3) this week who is The Retinal specialist here and apparently the best in the country with a long list of degrees, qualifications and published research papers ! 😃
