Everytime anything touch my incision, it hurts so bad

Hello everybody. I am 8 weeks post op. I am still having trouble sleeping past 2 hours. Everytime anything touches my incision (clothes, sheet, etc), it hurts so bad. I'm just at a 90 degree angle and of course I have the stiffness. I wake up and take my pain medication but I don't want to keep taking the pain medication. My question is there something I can rub on the incision to stop the pain?

Shirley have you tried massaging with Bio Oil, I am 5 months post op and still find it hard to wear trousers made of thicker material ie jeans. I find track suits are better or very lightweight material trousers.  I used to leave my leg out of the sheets and wear shorts to bed that really helped  Also I never got a proper good nights sleep  until after three months then it was a night here and there and then hey presto I slept.  I hope this helps.  As I say I am 5 months post op and am walking and getting on with life no pain, no sticks just got to get used to the thicker trousers before winter sets in!!!  Good luck

Hey Maggie, I will get some Bio Oil and try it. I still have some pain but I am getting around without assistance unless I go out to the store or something. I tried wearing capris but when I sit down, I had to roll my pant leg over my knee. I know this is going to take time and patience but still. This is the most painful surgery I've ever had. Thank you for the tip about the Bio Oil.

you are welcome try and massage it in several times a day I do mine after exercise when I get up, then again midday and then later in the evening after shower it really does help I massage over the scar nd both side of the kneee my Physio told me to do this and to try and do it for 12 monthst after op.  It does seem to give relief - hope it works for you - I am sure you will get there it is early days yet

I had the nerve block and it was wonderful. No nausea or breathing tubes. I didn't feel or see a thing.

I never really had much pain in the incision itself. it rather sounds as if it could be nerve pain?  I DID have that in the thigh, and it was really bad.  Even now, eight months later, it is still numb  and sometimes painful.  I hope it improves for you soon . .don't stop the pain meds too soon though . ..

Thank you so much. Everybody keeps telling me not to stop the pain meds but I don't want to become dependent on them even though they do help with the pain. I see my doctor in 3 weeks. Hopefully he will tell me what to do about this pain.

If you are taking something strong, like cocodamol or tramadol, do come off it slowly!  the results of stopping suddenly are really horrible . . (the voice of experience!!!)  I ran out, and thought, well, i won't bother getting any more, but that was a BIG mistake.  spent a terrible few days until I could get back to the doctor and get a new prescription . . .

Listen to the others, Do not stop  When you are totally pain free, you can start easing off the meds. All the while you are in pain, your joint will be unwilling to work properly. By taking meds your joint will be relaxed and receptive to physio etc

By just stopping your meds, not only is your head going to be messed up, but you will have to contend with the pain in your joint, not a very nice combination. Stop worrying about the effectsof the drugs .  Get rid of the pain first.

Thank you Sueisobel. I will continue to take my meds. I see where so many TKR patients stop taking pain meds after 6-8 weeks post op and I just figured this was normal. But I am still in pain, not as bad but still every day, especially on the days I have physical therapy.

Sweetie, You do what feels right for you.  If you are unhappy with your meds, change them.  You cannot be forced to take something that is not doing you any good.  What disagrees with some people agrees with others.  There are horror stories, hope stories and success stories.  Lets hope yours is a success story.  x

My meds work when I take them. I think I eased off them too soon especially since I'm still doing physical therapy for at least for 3 more weeks.
