Facing a harsh reality...

Hi all,

Like all hippies I needed to get thr or faced ever worsening pain and lack of mobility from deteriorating joint. The operation is I think fantastic in all forms for the most part, I have now not got the grinding pain of old joint, however, it isn't ever going to be easy on you when someone chops the top of your femur and drills it out .....etc...Indeed, I am 13 months post operation and frequently get pains in various parts of my leg, weakness and instability, I dread having a coughing fit, had one today ...the pain in my thigh made me cry but most days I can do most anything I could before symptoms from Hip started over three years ago. The reality is the op isn't perfect, takes a lot longer to recover from than anyone tells you and changes your life in ways you don't expect.But... if you need it doing , it's better than the alternative. I have posted a fair bit over the last year, might be interesting for new and hippies to be to go on my profile and look back at the rollercoaster they're getting on.

Yours in long term recovery, Jay.

I'll agree that THR isn't always perfect, since it certainly hasn't been for me. In one month I will have another surgery that I hope will fix the problems I've had since my THR. Complications can and do happen with any surgery. But many people posting here and on other forums seem to recover beautifully, without complications from THR, so for some it is perfect. Just wish that I were one of them!

Since you are having such serious problems as pain, weakness and instability, I am sure you have reported this to your surgeon. If he doesn't know what is wrong, then perhaps it is time to see another surgeon from a different practice for a second opinion. That's what I had to do. There is no reason why you shouldn't get a diagnosis and treatment for your issues. Good luck!

    Jay,

Thanks for that - a sobering reminder of what life is like post THR.  I have set up a website for the newer people to try to let them know my story, and just what they will be going through with THR.

The new hip will never be the same as the old one, but as you say, the old one was worn out and causing severe pains, so the new one may not be perfect, but it is better than the alternative.

    Best wishes

Hi Graham I agree with you 100% there is no point keeping on

thinking of how things used to be pre o/a we are lucky that we

get an op so onwards and upwards and I have just been told I

have to get the other one done still in shock as only got my op

4 months ago but better going through this again than that awful

pain .I was lucky that all went well for me and my heart goes out

to all who have had problems but luckily most ops are very

      successfull. take care

      Hi Erika,

Aww ... listen darling, there are loads and loads of people who are doing very well and are not here on the forum ...

I think that 90% (95?) of us were looking for an answer of something-not-feeling-right-in-hip or something similar - of course we have a lot of pre-op and still sitting on the fence ones as well -

smile it is all going to be okay - you'll see

      big warm hug
