Dear Patient community,
My name is Sofia, I am a student from the London College of Fashion. I am currently undertaking a project designing underwear and nightwear for women, with depression in mind.
Having suffered from depression for periods in my life, I know a little about it but would love to hear from you all. I understand that underwear may seem irrelevant or trivial to many of those suffering with depression. If you feel this is the case, feel free to let me know!
Rather than seeing my design as any kind of cure for depression, I would like the clothes to be designed with emphasis on how they feel for the wearer, with a particular emphasis on how colour can make you feel.
Does your clothing have an impact on your mood?
What is your favourite underwear to wear?
Do you think your underwear could be different?
How would you respond to a brand that emphasised the link between colour and emotion?
Thank you so much
Sofia

The colours I wear impact how I feel, I never really wear bright or stand out colours as I feel its draws out too much attention, I usually settle for black or white. I think dark colours emphasise depression best, depression is like being surrounded by darkness so there's a great link between the two that could work. Good luck with your project!

Hey Sofia,
This forum is a brave place for you to start your research, I would suggest! Underwear is the LAST thing on people's minds on here.
I was an art student once though, so I genuinely respect that you're asking for the right reasons... My answers would be:
Mood dictates what you wear - not the other way around. There's definitely a link, you're right, and it's a really interesting one. In theory I could put on a red, sequinned, skin tight dress tomorrow (I could just about get away with that, lol) and it would make me feel better, but what do I and most of the population do? ... Go for the easy option. Confidence is required to make that statement - most of us don't have that, especially when suffering low self-esteem.
It's possible - I'm guessing - to go out in the same "don't look at me" clothes you've been wearing for 5 days already, but under that be wearing the very best, amazing underwear and get a certain, private confidence boost from that? From what I know though, depression won't allow you that.
I definitely think that underwear could be different. You could really be onto something with this. Have you checked out swimwear trends? There's still your typical bikini, but also the tankini? The tankini would represent the less confident / depressed amongst us, I reckon.
The fabric you choose could be quite important and also indicates how you're feeling. Satin is supposed to be sexy, well you can forget that if you just want to eat Pot Noodle and stay on your sofa all day in your PJ's.. Maybe look into really soft, comfortable, unusual materials that haven't been used in underwear before?
Just one more thought (sorry any men reading this) but women's emotions and body shape change according to where they are in the month, so you could even go along those lines.... different underwear according to the moon!
All the best with your project xxx
