Feeling of burp stuck in back of throat and in diaphragm

Does anyone experience a feeling of a burp or lump stuck in the back of throat that also is felt in the diaphragm at times either simultaneously or separately. It’s usually worse after eating and comes and goes. Burping doesn’t reallt relieve it. I’m just trying to figure out if this is just acid reflux or something more like a motility issue where my food isn’t going down properly. It started a two months ago just in my diaphragm and slowly moved up to my throat as well. The pressure is no longer as bad in my diapraghm but is still there at times especially after eating. My diet had been very bland this whole time but I am

Able to eat more then I could in the beginning. I occasionally have heartburn but this feeling is different just a lump in the throat or pressure in the diaphragm like a trapped burp.  I also experience a lot of phlegm and pressure in my ears when I feel the lump in my throat. I just want to make sure it’s not something more the acid reflux so I don’t get back on a ppi unnecessarily.

Hi yes I’ve actually had two over the last few months. Long story but I had one on the hospital when I first started having the symptoms and that came back normal for everything and no damage to the esophagus. Then after the hospital my GI doctor wanted to do one to see if they missed a hiatal hernia and to do biopsies and a small dialation in case the pressure is due to esophagul spasms. That one came back normal as well with very minimal acid. I do feel heartburn at Times and my throat had been feeling very irritated but now I wonder if the pressure is due to a motility issue and my esohagus is not working properly or having spasms and that is why I’m feeling the pressure/lump in my throat and below my breastbone. It’s just odd because I’ve had acid reflux before and didn’t feel these symptoms I just had pain in my sternum and chest. I’m very worried that I’ve done permanent damage and this can’t be fixed with diet or meds. I’ve been on a very bland diet for the past 2.5 months and have lost 20 pounds but still have these symptoms. I had a allergic reaction while I was taking a ppi (protonix) and carafate After getting out of the hospital so I had to come off all the medication and am waiting for allergy testing to see if I’m allergic to ppi’s which would be very odd. I’ve also taken nexium in the past without any issues but they want to be sure before I go back on anything. My heartburn has gotten better it’s just the lump and pressure mainly with back ache at times so I’m just not sure what’s going on and don’t want to go back on a ppi if it’s not going to help if it’s being caused by something else.

I am currently taking a good probiotic daily and that has seemed to help with the bloating in my stomach which maybe has in turn helped with the pressure in my diaphragm. I also take dgl licorice tablets when I feel heartburn or just tums. I did purchase the slippery elm tablets but have only tried them once as I read they can interfere with other medications or supplements so I have to figure out when it is best to try. Have you felt the lump feeling in your throat or diaphragm before? Does the slippery elm help you?

I have had the lump in throat feeling but didn't try dlippery elm for it I've only resently heard about it I take PPI  medication for my problems

Did the lump feeling go away after taking the ppi? Did you ever feel it in your breastbone area as well? Were you just diagnosed with acid reflux or did you have another condition causing the lump?

Thanks I’m trying to relax but the past few months have made me so anxious worrying about my health and not having any definite answers as to what is going on. I have lost 20 pounds and still can’t eat normally without feeling the pressure and of course the heartburn at Times. I’ve had acid reflux in the past and was able to take nexium and have it get better but now these symptoms just feel different so I’m worried it’s more then reflux or that the reflux is so bad It will never go away because I did too much damage.

I am going through this right now. I had an endoscopy with esophageal dilation and it only helped my esophagus problems (food going down slow). I also have a small hiatal hernia. It's also giving me major anxiety and actually was put on a very low dose of zoloft because the anxiety is now waking me up at night. Im on ranitidine (zantac) for acid and sometimes the pills go down slow and make me have an anxiety attack. it constantly feels like someone has their hand around my neck putting slight pressure on it. I noticed this post was from 6 months ago. I wanted to know if you got this issue resolved and if so, what helped?? Im thinking about making an appointment with an ear nose throat dr. But I really dont want to get a camera stuck up my nose and down my throat.. unless im asleep!

Hi Chandra, I have had this exact same problem since early 2018. It began just as you describe, lump in throat and diaphragm pressure, then became more of a sort of raw furball-in-throat feeling and tendency toward soreness around collarbone/neck. For me it is especially exacerbated by liquids, esp. cold water, and I also burp too much, which sometimes relieves it and sometimes not. I also have esophageal and throat spasms. In fact I sometimes think the whole thing began when I drank a ton of cold water one night after dinner to try to help with hot flashes and had esophageal spasms all night as a result. In any case, I have tried a million things. I have been on Prevacid since April and just started Dexilant but so far no PPI has helped. I am finally having an endoscopy at the end of Nov. Like you I am dying to know if this is acid reflux or more of a motility/gastric emptying issue. The latter might still cause a kind of reflux, though like you I have also had more classic burning sensations in the past and very rarely have them with this. My gastro dr. actually told me PPIs can make gastric emptying issues worse, so if the scope shows that and no acid damage I guess I will go off the PPI. My other doc said there are different treatments for motility issues, like calcium channel blockers.

Anyway I've tried a zillion holistic things and the only one that did make some difference was slippery elm, 4 capsules taken before meals; unfortunately for me it caused lower bowel issues so I stopped taking it. (This is I think an unusual reaction.) I eat much more slowly and less food than I used to, but sometimes it seems these symptoms can be caused by my stomach being too empty, so I am never sure what the right balance is. In many ways these are typical symptoms of LPR, laryngo-pharyngeal reflux, and so I have cut out acidy foods as well as the usual heartburn triggers. But now I am wondering (as I wait for this annoyingly delayed scope) whether I should try other diet things like low carb, etc. For me it seems it's less that carbs or even wheat per se are a problem and more that certain kind of thick foods like untoasted bread or bananas feel like they cause trouble, maybe because like pills they sort of get stuck in there? Anyway, I do recommend drinking warm (not cold or hot) water, eating slowly, and slippery elm if you can tolerate it.

I am having the exact same symptoms. My throat is constantly burning and thick. I regurgitate alot. Burps are stuck. This ruins quality of life. I've been on many ppis and they didn't help. I tried every natural avenue. I'm currently taking acid relief 360. Stop aging now. It has helped a bunch but not completely. Let me know if the esophagus specialist can help you please.
