fibro and Chinese food

I like eating mild Chinese food but always suffer with flare ups afterwards this article explains why it may be happening:

A compound known as monosodium glutamate, or MSG, is a flavor enhancer frequently used in Chinese cooking, as well as in the commercial canning of vegetables, soups, and processed meats. MSG has also been controversial despite its classification by the FDA as “generally recognized as safe.” The controversy surrounding MSG centers around many decades’ worth of anecdotal reports of adverse reactions to foods that contain MSG. Similar to aspartame, MSG has been associated with Fibromyalgia and Fibromyalgia-like symptoms. In 2001, Smith et al. published a paper describing the cases of four female Fibromyalgia patients (two of whom were sisters). All patients had repeatedly tried conventional Fibromyalgia treatments (including antidepressant medications, injections, pain medications, physical therapy, counseling, and various alternative therapies), however none were consistently or profoundly successful for any of the patients. Under varying circumstances, two women eliminated MSG from their diets while the other two eliminated both MSG and aspartame. For all four patients, Fibromyalgia symptoms improved dramatically and in some instances, completely, following elimination of these substances from their diet. In their discussion, the authors note that MSG, in addition to aspartame, are toxic to certain nerve cells and suggest that MSG may also play a role in disrupting the body’s ability to process pain signals correctly (Smith et al., 2001).

Thank you for this. I love a chinese takeaway but always feel rubbish after too, now i know why and will start making my own ! i have noticed that since i started eating only fresh homemade foods again my pain levels are under control and i haven't needed to take add on painkillers for weeks (touch wood). Hi Krissy

i agree with homemade and fresh food being best for fibro sufferers all these artificial additives are bad for us I have developed an intolerance to (spicy foods I had to cut these out completely) also dairy products and sauces I have chrons and have to be mindful what I eat I'm ok if I have them in moderation just small amounts seem ok..codeine make me drowsy so I only take these when the pain becomes unbearable

good to hear you have yours under control my mum had OA and there is history of RA in my family with my siblings which is why I am taking glucosamine in the hope to strengthen my joints

      take care

I am bad with dairy, have to limit it and can't touch eggs or salad ! I am allergic to all pain meds the least being tramadol but have to watch when taking them as they lower by blood pressure and cause a sore rash. Our bodies seem to be sensitive to everything ! There is OA and RA in my family too my poor nans hands are so twisted and my dad has arthritis creeping up his spine. Mother nature can be a cruel one.

Hi shirl, I love Chinese food too but after the takeaway variety I suffer so I make my own now. It is quite satisfying cooking it myself.  It is very tempting on bad days to call for a takeaway though.  I have recently cut out all refined sugars from my diet and although it is early days I seem to have more energy and less muscle pain. May be coincidence but I will continue and see where it takes me.

i have learned that you can ask any restaurant to omit the MSG from your food they are making. also make sure to read labels when in the market, i always do. a lot of restaurants are advertising that that do not add MSG.

Thankyou Shirl;  that is very interesting and informative....and sounds very true.   I, too, used to really enjoy Chinese, and just recently, the family bought Chinese for mother's day....but can Honestly say, I didn't enjoy same, and yes, felt really washed out next day....same as today.  Last night I had a frozen dinner (Husband working away, and thought I'd have a change from my usual turkey melt)....but gee, at present....I too am feeling tired/weak/stiff neck...what we call...just plain down, with no patience (lucky perhaps that no-one else is here in house at present)...We do always hear re the old MSG...but to have it provely linked to these conditions....makes our diets limited too....frustrating, as am already finding my diet limited with my TMJs/facial muscles gone too....well, just need to keep looking/thinking....can't even make my own soups, much either, as there ar other ingredients that I have always used, that contain products that are unsuitable....am researching recipes on iternet for these new substitutes too......till next time, Bronlol

Hi Shirl, good to know, this article supports what I have experienced over recent years. MSG has caused me all sorts of problems with insomnia, rashes and other unpleasant symptons, it is something I steer well clear of. I have found as I have gotten older I have become more and more chemically sensitive, so try to avoid all preservatives and food additives. There seem to be a number of neuron exciters out there including unfortunately chinese food(MGG), chocolate and  alcohol, 😒which are all now a big no no. I am now having to eat fairly bland food and on good days making things like my own stock, and freezing it. My latest experiment is gluten free zucchini bread, which keeps for a week in the refrigerator and tastes yum. For people who are working, making your own whole food must be a real challenge.

    Good luck all.
