Sorry if this discussion has already been had but I have only recently been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and an completely new to the benefits system. I worked right up until my father became terminally ill I left my job to care for him at home as was told he only had weeks to live I nursed him alone for over five months before he sady passed in December I was ( and am until end of this week) receiveing carers allowance and Income Support This will end soon and my GP has given me a sicknote as there is no possibility of me working at the moment To whom do I give my sick note and what is it that I am asking to claim in the way of benefits??? My GP says this illness is not recognised by DWP Is that right? Thanks for any advice Wendidly

Firstly condolences to you....you poor thing, I do hope you have someone/anyone you can turn to for support. Meanwhile we're all here, my dear.
Right, your sick certificates will go to the Jobcentre (your local one) on a "as and when you get them basis" but you do need to call 0800 055 6688 (open Mon - Fri 8am til 6pm) to make a claim for ESA, they can send you the form (ESA50) or you could make the claim over the phone for Employment Support Allowance. If you have access to the internet there are websites that can give you guidance on eligibility and how to fill the ESA50 out. My advise is to make a start on the form and gather together as much medical evidence as you can and try to get yourself an appointment with an advisory service. This doesnt have to be Citizens Advice they are just one of many. If you look in your community newspapers/local press or stopshops and community halls, you may find help available there from a benefits adviser. I do wish you the best and hope this may help you somewhat.
Kindest regards Angie
