Finally no pain and no limping

I had a complete hip replacement Oct 30, 2017.  I had pain that slowly diminished after 3 months but a limp persisted.  I started walking between 4-6 miles spread out over the day.  I also start climbing about 10 flights of stairs (spread out over the day).  I added more stretching and began riding a bicycle.  The end result is that my limp has gone and I'm pain free.  I admit that at times I have to think about walking "heel-toe"

Good luck to all

Believe me, I had some discouragement in the first few months

I can still feel a little discomfort if I push my finger near the scar area

I get stopped every time I go through airport security even though I have a card from my surgeon.  I know the wand is coming so I accept it as part of the process

That's great news! I'm still limping after having a PTHR on Jan. 3. I go to PT twice a week to strengthen the muscles & my chiropractor stretches, adjusts & does some deep tissue massage around the scar. I am not able to walk long distances, not because it's painful, but it's a lot of effort my body has to exert because of the limp. I used to walk 3-4 miles but have only been able to go around the block with my dogs. It's good to know that you kept with it & had a great result. I will also keep going & try to stay as active as possible & hopefully I will be walking limp free soon.

You have to keep on exercising, forever I suspect .... I am now going to the gym regularly, under the watchful gaze of a personal trainer so I don't overdo it.

Great news. So encouraging to hear. I walk 4km most days, at first this was so hard. Has helped heaps.

I’m going to add step climbing as well in the hope it will help my psoas heal as I had a full cut. Leg still feels a bit heavy.

Well done. So pleased for you.

i’m 13 weeks post-op. I was lucky and dIdn’t have to struggle with pain. I can’t walk quite as far as you but am going to the gym etc as well. I also still have to concentrate on heel-toe at times, especially if I get a little tired. I suspect that may be the case for years!

I had similar problems for the first 3 months following surgery.  I found that my hip flexor muscles and basically my entire leg needed strengthening.  I started walking my dog twice a day.  I also started climbing stairs several times a day.  To help my hip and for limping , I laid on my non-operated side on the floor and raised my operated side (like a clam opening its shell).  I started off with a set of 10 and now do sets of 30 throughout the day.  That and the stair climbing helped my leg and hip strength a lot.  Occasionally, I ride a bicycle about 3 miles in the neighborhood.  Some people heal faster than others but you have to strengthen all the muscles that were affected during surgery

How do you get down on the floor observing the 90° rule? I'd love to get down there. I have to exercise on my bed.

Thank you so much for this! I'm having my op in eleven days and I suspect this information will be very useful for me in the coming weeks and months. Good luck for your continuing recovery.
