Hi, I've been searching for extra information and I can't seem to find any online. Searched in the group too but nothing came up. I'm really hoping I can find some good advice here.
I've been to see 2 private ENT specialists. When I was 2 years old I had grommets inserted and again at 9/10 yo. My last grommet fell out about 6 months before my 14th birthday.
I am scheduled for an op for grommets again on the 21st but the last specialist has forewarned me that it may not be possible, due to the damage to my ear drums over the years.
My dilemma is such:
I want to fly to Canada in October and both the specialist in 2014 and March 2018 told me that I'd be able to fly on a cortisone mix and some painkillers without any barotrauma, so to speak. When rising in altitude on a 6 hour drive, my ear drum collapses against the wall and suctions, which then doesn't allow for my inner ear pressure and outer ear pressures to stabilise and I sit in so much pain for at least 3 hours of the drive. Now an aeroplane obviously rises much higher in altitude and much more rapidly than a car does.
Will the cortisone mix and pain killers really prevent this barotrauma from occurring on the flight. I really don't want to lose my hearing or sit in pain for 18 hours plus.
If anyone has been through this or knows any information on it, I would be extremely appreciative and grateful! 😊
