Fragments injections

Hi all,

I'm 3 weeks in now and still having to inject myself every day.

I absolutely hate doing it, is there any alternative at all, is it really necessary?

I have the biggest bruise - it's like 2" X 1" and black!!

Is there any point talking to my doctor or do I just have to grit my teeth for another 3 weeks?

I hate wearing the stockings too, but I'd happily wear them all year if it meant I could stop injecting. sad

There is a 46 % chance of a DVT for most people if no measures are taken to prevent it. Some trusts prescribe oral treatment, others the dreaded stockings, the injections are another way. I had the injections, was taught in hospital to do alternate belly sides, to do it fast, avoid the same injection site, and NOT to rub the site afterwards. I got used to it, and became very thankful I am not a type 1 diabetic.

it may be worth talking to your GP if you cannot cope, otherwise I am afraid it is a grit the teeth job

Yeah i must admit I wil always look at diabetics in a different light. There's just something so wrong with sticking a needle in yourself. I have to wear stockings and inject for the full 6 weeks!

I assumed the risk was because of lack of movement and sitting still lots, but I am actually walking more than I did before the op!

I can't drive and I walk a minimum of 1.5 miles per day, before I used to drive to work and sit at my desk all day.

It's the worst thing sad but I need to stop moaning, everything else about my recovery is great 👍🏼

I had no idea that there was an injection option, it sounds dreadful, poor you!

I had to take a blood thinning tablet every day for 5 weeks  and no stockings. Surely worth talking to your GP to ask for a change to pills, why should you suffer if there is an alternative.

    All the best.

Hi. Its all up to your doc. Im 5 weeks 5 days....only had injections while in hospital. Not on anything apart from stockings. So far so good. I also stopped the stockings at 5 weeks getting too hot here in Australia to wear them. Different surgeons have different measures

Aww thank you. Maybe there is a little bit of hope then. I shall speak to my doctor and see what he says.

Obviously I don't want to take any unnecessary risks but it seems as tho it depends on where you live and who did your op rather than a definite risk.

    Hi Billie,

This is my 2nd round of the darn Fragmin injections - tomorrow 6 weeks post op from 2nd THR - one more week of injections to go -

First time I didn't like but got used to it - this time, I swear, the needles are either dull or bigger -

I did ask for an alternative - having read here that some get pills or even aspirine - he had an explanation about that this way the risk of DVT is minimal - and no, he was not going to out me on pills -

    no stockings though ...

Seems that there is also a difference in how long it is needed - I am on 6 weeks as well, my friend in Los Angeles just 2 weeks ...

No, you do not want to wear stockings - have you ever read the threads about the dreaded LED's ...

so sorry Billie .... you are half way !!!! counting down ....

big warm hug my fellow Fragmin sister

I was discharged on 3 low dose aspirin a day with stockings. But I have ditched them cause it's just too hot. But 46 percent getting dvtdvt. That's really highhigh! Do you have a source for that statistic?

Yes. The risk assessment sheet produced in the hip school preop

    I hope they will review.

It seems a bit extreme injecting and wearing stocking for the whole 6 weeks!

There is such a difference in experiences from just the few people who have commented on here.

I shall see if it's possible to have a telephone appointment with my gp and keep my fingers crossed xx

My trust take the DVT prevention very seriously too - I had the Fragmin injections for only three days, but that was in addition to the stockings (6 weeks) and a 4 week course of oral anti-coagulants. Would definitely rather have the pills, but the two pronged approach seems common.

I had the injections while in hospital but then switched to tablets for 4 weeks thereafter. They are called Apixoban and are quite expensive to buy but worth checking if your GP will prescribe. And I had to wear the stockings until my 4 weekly check up.

Those injections are the pits aren't they sad  I did mine for the whole 6 weeks, although they're painful and I began to dread them.

I discovered that if I used an ice-pack on the area first until it was numb, and then also straight after the injection, it became bearable.

Also, try not to keep injecting the same area.  I used my stomach and went round in a circle!  Hope that helps x

I had to do them twice a day for 50 injections hated every minute of it but it was worth it. Would rather that than have DVT xx
