my mother in law heard everything during both hip replacements with Spinal. She was not

a fan of that but had dreaded a GA. I love GAs and think being stupuorific after major surgery is as good as any state from which to recover

I had a spinal with sedation best thing I had done didn't hear see or smell anything and was in the ward after 2 hours. Would definitely go this way again. Love Gillxx

    hi gail

I just had a THR with GA and it was brilliant.

The pain beforehand was so bad that I was actually looking forward to being out of pain.

I have had the spinal twice and highly recommend it. Much easier to not have all the gear that

goes with the general. Absolutely no regrets.

I had a spinal 7 days ago, did not regret it as when I came around from the sedation I could feel nothing for 6-8 hours, so no pain which gave me time to get over the sedation.

I had 2 spinal with sedation, really good. Better than that nausea and groggy feeling of GA. also good form of pain relief as medication can work before leg heaviness goes.

I actually had general and a spinal with both hips. The general was due to me being on such a high dose of pain medication, they didn't think they would be able to give me enough sedation safely. So I had the best of both worlds. Totally asleep during surgery so I didn't hear anything and had the pain relief after from the spinal. Both surgeries, I had no illness from the general and was up in my room 2 1/2 hours from the start of my surgery. Good luck with whatever decision is jointly made by you and your Dr's for your surgery.

I had a GA. No sickness or grogginess. And very little pain afterwards as I was on a pain relieving drip. It was fine and I would recommend it if you are worried about the spinal variety.

are we all confusing the terminology here maybe?

I was given a spinal block as part of my op as well as a GA as a foem of extended pain relief for post op.

I dont actually understand the difference between this -GA and spinal block AND spinal block and sedation. What is the difference in sensation between GA and sedation?

It would really help those trying to decide if we could give a clear explanation. Can anyone out there help?

I had a spinal with no sedation and don't regret it at all. Felt very much part of the procedure, great banter between the surgeons and theatre staff and would definitely do the same again if I needed the other hip replacing.

Your anesthetist will discuss all the options with you and help you decide on the best one for you.

best wishes foe a speedy recovery which ever you choose.

      hi Stephie

Its always worth checking that the anaesthetist understands the surgeon's preference. Mine did not and we had to swap in the ante room where I was being prepped for an arthroscopy - I mentioned bringing my ipod in and the surgeon's jaw dropped. In his own words "was the anaesthetist proposing that he the consultant perform a 2 and a half hour operation for the first time in his life using just a spinal". I didnt care one way or the other so was happy to swap. It wsa a bit Monty Python tho' :-)
