Alica... ask your doc for some hydrothearapy.... exercise in the warm water helps. It sounds like your muscles are not a strong as they could be. I hope you improve. ..pain sucks

Yes to me your sound like you need some more gentlr PT or hydrothesrapy l would go back to my gp and insist on this or to see your surgeon again. It sounds like the muscles have not healed or built up enough strenth after your op and. Is causing you all sorts of problems. After all what would be the point in getting the thr if you are going to be just as bad or worse than before. This must be getting you really down and l feel so sorry for you. Please go and see about it you got the thr to have a better quality of life not be. In constant pain when you try to walk.

    Good Luck

thankyou lors i guess i need to take this a bit further and really take the bull by the horns will talk to gp and physio.

Are you able to do some simple exercises like lifting your legs in front of you with toes pointed upwards while sitting down and squeezing your muscles around your knee?

I've just seen the physio and that is one of the exercises she said to do anywhere anytime.

I hope things improve for you quickly Alicia.

Alicia, we all take different legths of time to heal but I would go back to the GP and ask to be referred back to your surgeon/consultant. I am presuming that you were checked at 6 weeks?

In the meantime maybe you could reverse back a little, go back to using two sticks for support, take some good pain meds, rest often and use some heat/cold packs.

Also make a note for the GP of how you are walking. If you walk really slowly, making sure that you are using the whole foot, does it still hurt, is the limp still there, or just when you get up to speed?

We often just put up with what we think is our new 'normal' but I would get it checked out.

Yes...walking correctly. Make sure you put your heal down and roll your foot to the toes. Make a conscience effort and stand straight. And slow steps. I think we should all check the way we walk. Sometimes because of my job im like a bull in a china shop and frequently catch myself limping...listing.....

      Try it. Hugs

    Hi Alicia,

Warm welcome to our hippies family where we share our personal stories and experiences, tips, advice, support and understanding like nobody else -

Well, I am almost 6 months post-op 2nd THR and almost 12 months from 1st one and can tell you that I still have trouble with the first couple of steps-

my muscles feel so tight in groin and thighs and around knees that I to stand up and erect my body to the fullest so to speak ...take a deep breath and then start taking the first steps ... so no quickies here cry - so darling, take your time -

This was major surgery and a lot of healing is still taking place and will be for a while - all still very fragile -

I agree with Kate -- are you walking with any sticks or unaided -

Do you see a physical therapist ? Or maybe someone can watch the way you walk ... the time leading up to surgery our brain found the easiest way for us to take steps - limping, hunched, etc - and now the brain needs to be re-trained in proper walking -

Use a stick (or 2) and make sure that you are balanced - stand on both your feet, and stand up straight- relax your shoulders and back - push leg from buttock ( alittle hip swinging - I don't know how to explain this movement), heel to toe and complete step - also important to move shoulders ...

so much to think about something that used to come so naturally, right ?

In all honesty, I still am  aware how to walk and if I am not, I limp ....

don't give up and of course you are much better off now !!!! the healing takes a lot of energy, that's all ----

one step at a time and go easy --- be gentle and kind with yourself - listen to your body and noone else -

Come back here any time you have a question or concern or just want to share -

how are you getting on otherwise?

    big warm hug

    renee

    Alicia,

So sorry to hear you are that dissapointed.  I know that pre-op fitness plays a huge part in recovery, my first recovery was much better than my second one 10 weeks later. I guess as we get older, our bodies do not 'bounce back' as quickly either.

I am just over 4 months post replacement, and 2 months post revision, and walking like a true penguin. I also have difficulty with the first 2-3 steps, but now employ a good stamp of my foot to wake up the muscles.

I now use hiking poles instead of a walking stick. the hand position is better, they do not put so much strain on my shoulder, and mostly I use them as a balancing aid rather than for weight bearing.

    Best wishes

I am going to use your stamping before I start walking after

sitting and see if that helps with the stiffness of the first few

      steps. Thanks for that

      Alicia,

Just glad to help - it wasn't me that discovered it though.

I have put it on my THR website now.

I am not sure how it started after my first hip op but I remember struggling to stand and my partner said "You do it much better when you do the tappy foot thing".

Somebody on the forum then said that they felt like their foot didn't know what it was supposed to be doing. I suggested that they tap their foot first and hey-presto!

I think I will do a post on it, maybe good to pass it on.
