Girl I'm seeing has genital herpes

A girl I've been seeing for some time just told me after already having sex with her that she has genital herpes. She told me that she had a minor outbreak 6 months ago (1 sore) and that is when she began taking Valtrex. We used a condom but I went down on her. I've read that the statistics of spreading genital herpes while on Valtrex using a condom is 1% but what are the statistics of me going down on her (on Valtrex) obviously unprotected. Any advice is appreciated.

She said she hasn't had any outbreaks or any visible sign since 6 months ago.

    Hi there,

that is very disappointing that she didnt tell you.

Alright so first, find out whether it is HSV1 OR HSV2 genital herpes. people assume genital is automatically hsv2 but I have genital hsv1 from a guy going down on me unprotected.

If it is hsv1, relax because you might already have it, most people get it when theyre kids (infected family kissing faces etc) and its the common coldsore that 80% of people have.

If its hsv2, you should have protected oral and penetrative sex but you can rest assured a little that hsv2 prefers the genitals. its a slight variation of the same virus.

Having genital hsv1, I know that youre not all clear when it comes to the 'prefered' virus setting up a place to release an outbreak. despite what websites tell you, it is possible to get reaccuring infections in wherever the location.

I recommend getting tested, mostly the symptoms will show within 2 weeks after youve been exposed, glands will usually be painful and up high when you first contract it (but you might be a lucky one who shows to symptoms at all ever.) So in saying that go to the doctors for a test to see iif there is at least any viral shedding, regardless if you feel and look normal down there.

Being a male yout chances of contracting the virus are less, but I would put a word into her that she needs to do more research on it and learn to become more comfortable with it so that she can talk about it and warn (potential future partners.) If you plan on staying with this girl a long time, always use protection, dont have sex when she feels itchy (at the sight of initial infection) or stings anywhere near her vagina. If its hsv1 and you have already had coldsores before, you are fine and have nothing to be worried about when it comes to oral sex.

and yes, herpes is not that bad once research is done. there is an unnecessarily huge stigma around it, so if you stay with her and you do not have hsv1 or 2 anywhere, I do recommend you research everything yourself as well and stay positive and supportive. I find the biggest cause of outbreak is stress.

id also like to add that it is possible for you to contract hsv1 and hsv2 genitally even while using a condom. the chances are less, as you know, and if she is not experiencing an outbreak you have much greater chances of not contractong the virus.

youve done your research so dont stress too much. just get to the doctors.

Think it is pretty rare to get HSV2 on the mouth, but apparently you still can? I get a HSV2 rash above my knee, on my thigh and near my elbow. Weird huh! Don't quite understand it.

I have HSV2 and had 1 small pimple size blister, god about 10 years ago now. I have a husband and he has never shown signs of having anything and we do not use a condom. So I think it is pretty low risk if you avoid sex when there is an outbreak or healing of sores, if you use a condom and maybe she can take suppressive meds?...

    no biggie x
