Going Skiing

Hi

I know this sounds a strange questions and i hope i can explain why i am asking. I consider myself a fit and active 41year old however in Oct 2013, i had my right hip replaced and have not experienced many issues throughout the last three months. I regularly go to the gym now and usual walk and strengthen the hip area.

I have not been able to ski for over two years prior to the op however the opportunity has arisen to go in March 2014. My concern is, just because i feel great, am i risking my health by going skiing or could it be that i am fighting fit and will manage it no problem?

I have a habit of getting ahead of myself however i just wanted some feedback to those active people out there who are chomping at the bit to get back to some normality???

Appreciate any feedback no matter how blunt it may be <-)

Go for it so long as you stay in control and don't push it

Can you contact your surgeon and ask for advice?

I have just looked up the answer for you. If you are not a novice skier than it appears that it is ok. However you can be at risk of wearing out your hip quicker. Some of the obvious risks are dislocation or fracture of the hip. if you fall. I also think you should ask your surgeon as you will only be 6 months post op and it can take a year to fully heal. Hope you make the right decision for you. Good luck.

    Hi.

Thank you so much for your response and for doing some research for me. I haven't had a meeting with my consultant however the nurse i spoke with said he was happy for me to go but to be very careful. I suppose he didn't sound too happy about me going however the reaction i have had from everyone else is " what are you doing"

I suppose what i am trying to say is " Am i doing something stupid and should i be waiting for twelve months before i get back on the slopes"? I know you cant answer that for me but the only experience i have with hip replacements is my mother and she is 76 ha and doesn't ski.

Sorry to ramble on but i have had my active life on hold now for near on two years and feel great now but should i just recover and wait until next year???

    Thanks again for advice

HI Steph I know it can be frustrating being restricted but ifit was me I would wwait until you have seen your surgeo. Far better to be completely healed otherwise you may end up havin to have the op again. Although dc we have had a new hip they are never as good as the real hip and socket.
