as above I had a right leg thr about 9 weeks ago and my previous good leg (left ) which before I had no pain in now hurts all the time .I limp and my right leg  (new hip joint )seems longer than the left .I go to pyhsio etc ,ride an exercise bike for about 5/6 kms a day but when I drive to work which is about 75 miles each way per day when I get out the car I am in agony as I was before the operation so now only going to do this twice a week  .The operated leg (right ) feels really good just cant understand how my previously good leg is causing me constant pain it feels as though it has just swapped over .

    Hi Richard

Do you think that your other leg is sore because you are using it more {or were} to compensate for the bad leg.

    Some people find that.

Are you in the UK? if so go aned see the occupational therapist, its a self referral thing, dont have to be referred by a doctor and see what suggestions she has that might ease your driving.I know I was given a cushion {proper OT one} before my THR's when I was drivig a lot and it is a blessing

    Hi Richard.

The same thing happened to me..I had a LTHR in Feb last year which took 12wks to recover from.

Never had any issues with the other hip until the September, when out of the blue I started to get pain which has slowly worsened..I'm now waiting to have that hip replaced.

Apparentely it is not unusual after THR for the other hip to need replacing..wether it's to do with the good hip compensating for the operated one is unclear,it can be a case of arthritis moving from to the unoperated hip, either way I'm having another THR.

Hope yours improves, but you could? need another op.

    Good luck.

    Hi Richard,

Good point from Eileen. Do you know if your left hip also needs a THR? Both mine needed replaced and when one had surgery, the other took a beating because it was doing the work of two legs.

Also consider that nine weeks is still early for feeling 100%. It can take a year to completely heal.

Report this to your doc for you might need a mild muscle relaxer to combat spasms from the repetitive activity of sitting for long periods of time. And rule out a blood clot and change exercise routine a bit. In the meantime, perhaps small changes in your routine could bring relief, like stopping frequently on your commute to stretch and move about, and changing the angle of your car seat. Dress for pure comfort even if you have to change clothing upon arrival to work.

Hope this evens out for you soon!

good morning Richard, I could've been the one to write the same thing. If it's exactly what I have been going through. People tell me it's because I am compensating and now my muscles on the opposite side hurt. Also the weather is cold and that could be a problem. Before the cold weather I finished physical therapy. I was doing real good sometimes even without a cane. Now I am five months since surgery and I'm back to the Walker because by opposite side has so much pain.

Let's both hang in there, we will get better!
