Had my THR the 9th

Posted , 11 users are following.

Been back home a few days everything seems good except sever muscle spasms I have only used the Berg Ice cooler pad system am I allowed to use heating pads? The pain meds are helping the surgery site but not the spasms and right now it hurts worse than ever, no skin fever, or other signs of infection I am fairly certain it is muscular. Walking till now has been good even able to take a few steps with minimal weight on Walker. Pain area super thigh on top of keg, behind knee and the meaty part of my left butt cheek.

Worse, the entire upper thigh, behind my leg at knee, and the meaty part of my butt next to the incision.

    Hi Edward,

Good to see you back here on the forum and congratulations for having the surgery done -

    Are you back at home?

So sorry to hear about the spasms and cramps though - did you also have them when you were in the hospital ?

If you had the posterior approach to THR, muscles and tendons were cut and sewed back - a lot of healing needs to take place, regardless -

Your leg has been forcefully manipulated in order to dislocate the hip joint, protheses needed to be placed (hammered in) and everything put back in place .. so, pain area fits the description - I had 2 big hand bruises , one right above my knee and another on thigh ...

I read that drinking tonic water helps with the cramps and it really did - so try it -

do you have help at home? is a physical therapist coming to your house?

remember that you just had major surgery, sweetheart and are very early in recovery ...

come here anytime you have a concern or question or just want to chat, rant or whatever, okay ...

be gentle with little Edward -

    big warm hug

    renee

outside of Spasm pain my biggest concern is it being day 5 postoperative and still no bowl movement. But I feel it there waiting so try some stronger stool stuff tomorrow. Also itchy from need of shower

They let you go without a bowel movement, wehad to have one before release. Take some senokot and stool softeners. Are you drinking plenty too?

I wasn't allowed in the shower once home, had to make do with strip washing. Have you got someone to help Edward? A long handled scrubber will help you get your legs done.  Have some moisturising cream handy too, the skin gets extremely dry.  I didn't have the stockings but still got alien legs.

I think its whatever works for you regards hot and cold, I used a hot water bottle wrapped on a towel so it wasn't toooo hot.

Regards lack of a wash, I found that baby wipes, or the like, were one of the best, get the ones, with moisturiser, grab a handful and start with your face, they get filthy very quickly, so change as you need to, and just like with baby, bottom last and ditch in rubbish bag, you will feel much cleaner, and your skin will love the moisturiser, and its does stop the itch. Avoid the scented wipes if like me you are sensitive they will make you itch.

I would check with my doctor's office to see if they can give you better pain relief. Those spasms cannot be helping your recovery. I would also be spending as much time as possible resting, elevating and icing. Using heat is not advised this early in recovery.

The entire time I was on opioid pain medication (5 weeks), I was told to use Miralax daily and 2 doses of stool softener capsules. I had no problems with elimination. It takes a few days usually to have the first one, but then should be regular, daily occurrence.

I have only just got rid of my spasms, at about 10 weeks, I will be 13 weeks Wed, once I could move around more they went. very painful, started just as you have but gradually ended up with both legs from bum to toes. Only happened during the night.

You may be able to get muscle relaxants from the doc, I didn't like them.

Some people swear by tonic water, it didn't work for me, so I just put up with them.

    I had posterior cut.

It does not mean that you will have them that long, just because I have, hope you can get sorted.

Trying a brown cow for my stool issue later today. 1/4 cup prune juice, 1 dose of milk of magnesia, onetsp butter heated to let mix up and drink. The Dr. Recommended it. Now that I am on oxycodone for surgery pain alternated with Baclofen for spasm pain I seem much better. Just took my firs shower with permission and hurt worse now than before the shower I feel like I ran a marathon lol.

I had a muscle spasm last night and thought I was going to die! Interesting to read about the tonic water, I love tonic water and will give it a go. It is 18 days since my hip replacement. Having physio but wondering if I am doing too many as groin is sore and tender.

First of all. Welcome to hippie land.

Next its early days so be kind .

Rest when u feel tired and take painrelief as necessary.

I had lthr posterior 11th april and found nerve pain worse than anything.

Had oxycontin twice daily with some liquid in between, gabapentin for nerve pain and paracetamol at first.

Used cold flannel or ice on skin for tender/electric shock type sensations.

Keep going with regular laxative whilst on daily painrelief.

Shower if allowed and get into that safely (i have walkin shower so lucky).

Need help with lower half to dry lol.

It will get better....early days yet but follow advice and this forum is great....plus faster than nhs for response time.
