Haematoma

Had my hysterectomy four weeks ago, vaginal, really easy no problems and came home two days later.  On day six I started to bleed and the bleeding became really heavy.  Also developed other infection problem and was re admitted to hospital.  An ultrasound scan and vaginal scan showed I had a haematoma following the surgery and this was the cause of the bleeding.  Three weeks on and I continue to have bleeding, fresh red blood.  Although this is a lot less and not all the time I am still concerned.  The bleeding starts again every time I have a bowel movement and seems to come from the back passage as well as the vagina.  I went for a follow up appt today and the dr wanted to discharge me as I look clinically well and without examining me.  I wasn t happy with this and after lengthy talks they have arranged to review me again in two weeks.  Has anyone else had a haematoma or bleeding like this. ?

    Hi Christabelle

I had a vaginal hysterectomy and anterior (bladder) repair and like you I had no problems, no pain or discomfort and left hospital after four days with no bleeding.  Because I felt so well I obviously overdid things and at 2 weeks post op I also had a very heavy and scary bleed.  Got and emergency Dr's appointment and he suggested either going home and resting or going to A&E.  He did an examination but said he could not see anything because of the amount of blood and a large clot.  I therefore decided I didn't want to go to A&E and get the same response.  I spent the following day in bed and the bleeding stopped and I have made an amazing recovery since - jogging at week 5!  I'm sure you have just twisted or bent over and caused this bleed - just take it easy and I'm sure you will be OK.

    Best wishes

Hi, had an abdominal hysto just over 6 weeks ago with very little blood loss....for your piece of mind I would be really tempted to make an appointment with your GP...if your having pr blood loss you may have developed some internal haemorrhoids which are being aggravated when you have your bowels open ( I'm not sure if you had any constipation post op, but straining can also cause this )..... Even if it's nothing like that if it's fresh bleeding best not to leave it...xxx

Thanks for the input.  The bleeding is from the haematoma which was diagnosed by ultrasound and then a trans vaginal scan.  I ve now had it for three weeks.  Just can t believe they would want to discharge me without an examination or repeat scan to see what is going on.  I m actually losing all faith in this hospital.  I ve now received an appointment for a CT scan on my lungs from when I was admitted with a query pulmonary embolism.three weeks ago.  It was actually. Chest infection which was treated and I was discharged three days later.  Good job it wasn t a PE or anything could have happened in the six weeks it has taken them to give me an appointment.
