Hair shedding: DOES IT EVER END???

So I'm 48, in peri and for past year started having really bad hair shedding like clumps. My sister and mother claim they never had this issue which made me feel worse. And my OBGYN said only 40% of women have this issue so lucky me, also made me feel defective. Then, I started using this special shampoo, revita and it seemed to lessen the shedding during the winter but now all of a sudden it's getting worse again. Not sure if change in weather or hormones are nose diving again. Question ladies, does it EVER stop and get better? Even after menopause? My mom still has a thick head of hair but again clearly I'm not taking after her and she also claims menopause was easy for her and she didnt go through it until 60. But she also had 3 kids and I'm childless. 😦

hi Sakura - Well, i am 63, Almost 8 years post & my hair is coming out in clumps as well - just started the last 4 months - i had a physical in September & my extended thyroid panel was fine, but now i wonder if my thyroid could be off - i know stress, menopause & thyroid can all cause hair loss & seeing how i got my worst menopause symptoms after 60, i am thinking it just might be menopause - i have also noticed that my hair & skin are very brittle & dry - no amount of oil, lotion or conditioner help - this madness has just got to stop & i do wish someone could tell us when it all will stop - with this corona virus i see all these people vigirously exercising outside & i can barely walk with my achy legs that render me gimpy - so over it! good luck! maybe get your thyroid checked -,

Thanks for replying Debra. Did you not having shedding in peri then? Sorry you are losing hair as well. I am hypothyroid and on medication and I did have them check it again when started shedding and they said my thyroid was fine. 😦

    Hi Sakura,

We have the same issue though I am 5 years younger. I think my hair shedding started in mid 30s and I am 43 now.

Nothing helps...all hormones "normal " which I don't understand how they decide what is normal for YOU. The range is so big.

I do have some older family members with thinner hair at the front, maybe it's unavoidable for some of us 😦 But I feel way to young to have so many symptoms.

I totally agree Rainbow. My aunt and grandmother had thinning hair I think towards menopause but my aunt said HRT helped her hair. And some studies say it does but a doctor I saw says doesn't always help. But my mother and older sister have a full head of healthy hair past menopause. Really hoping I didn't get screwed and get my dad's genes only. Their side of family is super unhealthy. Tho I eat really healthy. That's why trying shampoos etc. Saw palmetto I think helps but when I took it, it made me gain a lot of weight. I'm looking into shampoo form instead and getting this giant fibroid out so I can try natural hormones like wiley protocol or even a normal BC pill again. I feel so defective that my mother's side of family is fine. I thought I would take after my mom 😦

Have you had progesterone checked on labs? I read it can help shrink fibroids and you can get cream otc.

Everything I try seems to make me gain weight now it seems.

I have long dark hair and grey floors, I can see every hair shed especially being homebound with the covid scare, every hair lost is on my floor or in the shower. It's so frustrating.

I hear you. I am experiencing the same. Hair on floor, sometimes in shower. After I comb wet hair in the comb and stuck to my neck. 😦 I was told I have low progesterone but when they tried to give me natural progesterone I gained 20 pounds and the fibroid grew. My fibroid responds to both and estrogen and progesterone which I guess they are now finding is true for most women. It's not just about estrogen. That's a myth. The weird thing is it seemed better for a while with the shampoo I was using and then now past month worse again. I guess my hormones might be shifting. I don't think menopause is natural. I think it's a ridiculous unnecessary nightmare. It's fine if we stop having kids but everything else doesn't need to go to shizit. Sleep, anxiety, hair, weight, bones etc etc. If men had this they would have a treatment.

I hear you on the hormones shifting, every time I think something is helping like DIM or progesterone cream, it stops working or makes everything worse as hormones shift again.

When this started I lost 10 lbs without trying. Last year I gained it back plus extra and am now a bit overweight. I exercise more and eat better than I ever have but can't lose the weight.Bloated, dry thin hair, pimples a few times a month, dark facial hair, no libido, trouble sleeping, moody, neck pain, stiff body and achy bones. This sucks!

I don't want to go on bcp but can't continue like this, according to doctors I am too young for menopause and my labs are "normal" so they won't discuss bioidentical HRT.

I agree, if men went thru this they would have figured it out long ago.

42 now and I.ve had lots of shedding since mid 30s when my symptoms had slowly started. I.ve noticed at times it's worse than others but for last 2 years, I have to go outside to brush my hair...thats how much I lose.

Ugh. I read that hormones can reverse it if you take them. Have you tried that? Are you in perimenopause? I want to try but have to get rid of a giant fibroid and dermoid first. Feel so defective since no one in my family had any of these issues, hair , fibroid etc. 😦 Thanks for responding.
