Was wondering if anyone has been prescribed citalopram for IBS? If so did you suffer any side effects? I'm suffering with extreme nausea and I'm only on day 4!

    Hi Michk,

?I am kind of surprised they prescribed cital for your IBS, as a lot of people actually have stomach issues with it.  I have been on cital for going o 4 years, and I have been lucky and have had not had the side effects that most have had to deal with, and maybe you won't have it as bad either.  I have intestinal issues, including some IBS issues due to Sjogren's Syndrom, and my stomach was always very sick in the mornings.  My Gastro doctor prescribed "Amitriptriptiline" a VERY LOW dose, and it has helped calm the nausea, and intestinal issues.  Everything calmed down finally, and no more problems with all that.  Some of us take our cital at night about 30 minutes before bed with a small amount of food.  That is how my doctor prescribed it, and I never had the nausea issue, it also helped with sleeping through the night.  If you are not already, you might want to give that a try, see if that will help.

I wish you good luck Michk!!  Hope the nausea goes away soon!!

I used to take amitriptyline but wanted to sleep all the time and as I now have 3 children the GP suggested citalopram. I spoke to the GP today about the nausea and she assured me that it will ease and disappear as my body gets used to them. She also told me to take them in the mornings and not at night. Fingers crossed!!

Yes..the amitriptyline has to be a very low dose for sure!  I take the lowest dose it comes in, and now problem with being sleepy during the day.  You follow your doctors orders, and I am sure you will be fine!  Everyone is different, and reacts differently to meds.  What works for one, may not work for another.  I have just been lucky, and have had not had the issues some of the others have had, thankfully!  smile  Good Luck to you!
