Hi, I'm on amitryptiline which is in the same class. My gastroenterologist said that it is thought the antidepressants in low doses help the nerves to recover from the damage that is causing them to be oversensitive to pain. From experience I can say that this is not a speedy process! But it does help you sleep.

One 10mg tablet is about 2.5 mm across, the size of a sweetener tablet if you've ever seen or used those. So they really are super easy to swallow.

Unfortunately, you have been prescribed an anti depressant. I refused these medications to treat my neuralgia because they have nasty side effects and they take a while to work if they work at all. I would ask your GP for an alternative medication which is not an anti depressant. I would think very carefully before taking them. Even at low dose, they can be trouble. Drowsiness is not one of the side effects I would want and there are many others which can be worse. Check the side effects online.

I was not impressed at the way my GP dismissed my concerns about the side effects. I was offered amitryptaline and my worries about withdrawal effects were played down. He told me that there were no withdrawal problems despite the fact there are people on this site who have complained about not being able to come off them. Please be very careful.

Hi Pippa, i thought you were lost in Spain! I hope you're OK and your holiday was good. I don't like the thought of taking any tablets either but have had neuralgia for years which causes my face awful pain which is hard to control. The fact is these things take a while to work and i asked for help with this, something to help me sleep after i came out of rape crisis and other things in the past off the same doctor who originally said no. I now don't trust what she's said and what she's doing. I don't know where else to go though?

You could ask to be referred to a pain management clinic alternatively. I'm not long back from a Star Trek convention weekend in Birmingham which was great fun.
