Hi all .I am having a camera down my throat in the next month .I have barrets osaphagus and silent reflux .I have had 4 camera.s over the last 7 years or 8 .

But this time I can not bring myself to have it or do it . I struggle with anxiety and panic attacks. And I am struggling to mentally bring myself to have it this time. As I really hate having them. They are not nice at all .

I was going to ring my specialist tomorrow and tell them I want to be out asleep this time .

Anyone have any advice and opinions .even though I had them before .I don't want to have it this time

Thanks anyone

I was put under conscious sedation.  I don't remember anything.  They had me roll over to my side and they started to push the drugs and about 1 min after that is all I remember.

I do sympathise. I've had numerous scopes over the 22 years I've known I've had Barrett's. Unfortunately for me, normal sedation doesn't work so I am fully conscious all the time - even when they've given me a double dose.

It does make a difference who does it.

Once when the department had been busy and they were trying to catch up with a backlog, they managed to get a locum to supplement their Saturday morning staff. It was like a conveyor belt and the worst scope I 'd ever had - so much so that I complained, they decided not to use that locum again and my next scope was done by one of our consultants with whom I am a friend. I barely felt a thing. He did tell me that they can add a small amount of narcotic to the sedative to make it more effective (which they do for an EMR or RF ablation) .

The thing you must do is discuss this with your doctors. They are usually very sympathetic. You're not the only one who undergoes panic attacks at the thought of a scope. They will be able to work with you to make the experience less traumatic.

Hi thank you very much for the reply .

How is your barretts these days as I read your have had it along time .

I will definitely ask for the narcotic sedative as I really want to be out out as much as possible .as the last time I struggled with camera . But as the condition of what we have I no I have to have monitored cameras. Every 2 years as my grandad died of oesophageal cancer this year he had barrets and was on 2 year scopes but caught 2 late . So I would rather have them to monitor but just don't like going through them anymore .thanks for advice

Hi Dean. I'm like you, due to have an endoscopy done next month. My last one and first one was done a year ago (with colonoscopy) but done privately, I was given the maximum sedation and I don't remember a thing. Did you have sedation last time? Was it done on the NHS?

I'm worried that next time as it will be NHS I might not be given the maximum dose. Any ideas?
