Heart palpitations

hi me again,  ok so only just over 2 weeks now until my TAH. Last night I could not sleep and my heartbeat was going really fast.  I have had this before but just fleetingly but last night it went on for over 4 hours. Has anyone else had symptoms like this?  I am sure I am just stressed due to upcoming op but I was really tired today after having little sleep last night. Thanks xx

    Hi there, yes I have had these symptoms, about 2 years ago my heartrate shot up to 190 beats per minute and I ended up in the ressus department of our local hospital ans was an inpatiant for 3 days it took 2 days to control it, have you been to see your GP about this? if you are having bouts of AF (Atrial Fibrilation) And I am not saying that you are, but if this is what it is then your GP needs to know as will the anaesthetist, I am on Beta Blockers for this though my GP thinks that possibly it was just a one off and I am going to have my meds reduced, but you really need to be checked out, do you suffer with panic attacks at all? this could be the other cause.

      Hi thanks for your reply. No I don't suffer from panic attacks. Well I never have in the past anyway. I thought it was just nerves causing this. Thank you though and if I get it again I will make an appt with my gp. I used to get palpitations occasionally but just when my anaemia was bad. My blood count is quite good just now so I know it's not that. Xx

      Yeah when I was really anaemic mine kicked off again, I'd forgotten that, it's up to you what you do of course but tell your anaesthetist when you go for your op as he/she really needs to know. Hope you don't get any more attacks of this, it's a weird feeling I could hear my heartbeat in my ears I didn't have to feel the pulse in my wrist.

      Ok I will do.  I will probably see my doc as I would be worried if I mentioned it on the day to the anaesthetist he wouldn't go ahead with the op and I can't bear to go back to waiting.  My hair is white already ha ha. Yes it's a horrible feeling. It makes me cough.  And I try breathing through it but it just doesn't slow down. If I lie on my side I feel my heart bumping off the bed.  Scary stuff.  I never feel worried funnily enough. Maybe I got used to it when I was anaemic but I would hate for it to hold up my operation. Roll on 2nd April when it's all over. Thanks again for chatting x it's good to know I'm not alone x

      No you're not alone Poppy.

      Does it get worse on your left side by any chance? only ask as mine began while I was on my left side in bed and when I was in hospital I tested it, while I was on my right side or lying on my back it slowed down but when I went on my left side it sped up........really odd. confused

      Hope the 2nd goes well for you, come on here and moan as much as you like and of course share happy thoughts as well.

      Ha ha thank you. My op is 1st which is April fools day........should I be worried ha ha.  Yes when I'm on my left side it is much worse. I tried to sleep sitting up.  Not very easy.  Hopefully I will get a better sleep tonight. Thank god I am only part time at work just now as I'm so tired.  My body is tired but my mind is racing on.  Be so glad when it's all over x

    Hi. waiting for op is nerve racking especially if not had an op before and spend time thinking about it so if you were not sleeping it could be anxiety but with only 2 weeks to go its best you just get checked out. Is your pre op a week before? They'll check blood pressures etc too and hopefully it is nothing more than a panic attack (not that I'm dismissing anxiety is an issue and for some its horrid) and getting checked out will put your mind at rest. I'm waiting for my op too but had lap in Nov to investigate problems first and was my first ever anaesthetic and op and i was a nervous wreck so understand how you're feeling. If this is your first op im happy to answer any questions xx

      Hi.  Yes this is my first op. I had knee operations when I was younger but I am now 49 so really anxious. Also my mum went in for a routine biopsy taken from her breast and died from a massive stroke. She was 55. I don't think that's helping. I have already had my pre op assessment so I think if I get anymore symptoms over next couple of days I will go and see my doc. She has been great.  I also have really small veins that collapse all the time so worried about getting anaesthetised and also the hospital trying to put in drips etc.  I'm being a big baby I think. X

      Omg no wonder you're anxious and I'm so sorry that you've been through that. You've been through family history and they will be aware of it and would look at all your medical history. Im no expert but Technology, Equipment and monitoring gets better year on year so be assured by that too. I have small veins too and they took ages to get drip in so Dont panic if same happens to you. It honestly feels like you've had a nap for a few minutes and they are talking to you in recovery and you stay there until they are happy with you to be moved out onto ward xx

      I know I will be in good hands.  It's just the thought isn't it.  All my family and friends think I am coping but I hide a lot of my feelings from them. This forum is helping me greatly. Thanks for your reassurance x

      Its easier to say all is okand keep going for everyone. Completely get that lol. Good thing on here is you can say things they would think strange and bet your bottom dollar we all think/thought the same. Plan your next two weeks with things to do to distract your mind. I'll be back on here when I'm closer to my op looking for the same reassurance wink xx

      The hospital deleted me off waiting list so not until 6th May now xx

      Oh I remember reading about that. What a nightmare.  Well I will be about 4 weeks ahead of you so we can swap stories x
