Hello there

Been following this group for a few weeks now and decided to jump in. I had bunion surgery, hammertoe, plantar fasciitis and tarsal tunnel release, all on the right foot on Feb 26. Have done really well except for falling twice and putting a lot of pressure on my foot trying to keep from falling. I am approaching week three and actually have more pain now than I did at first. Sutures are out, thank goodness and I am still no-weight bearing. I see the surgeon Friday and will probably go into a post surgical boot. I keep thinking I should be further along but I have to consider I had four procedures on one little foot! I am 63 years old and it is not easy getting around. Hubby rented me a knee walker and that really has been a big help. Happy healing to all!

I make my own ice packs that get really cold and slushy. 1 cup of rubbing alcohol and 1 cup of water. Put it in a ziplock bag (I double bag) and freeze. It will not freeze solid but it will be a slushy consistency that you can break up and form around your foot. Use a tea towel between it and your foot as it does get really cold. I love them!!

Physical therapy this morning and things went well. deep massage today, some spots hurt a bit but overall it felt really good. I showed her how I could take a few steps without the crutch and she tsk, tsk'd me saying I wasn't supposed to be doing that yet...lol The scar on the bottom of my foot just won't heal. The incision in the skin is now hard on both sides, looks like it is healed underneath. I was to cut that dead skin off so bad but the therapist keeps saying to leave it alone. Going to be hard as I'm a picker.

Rena, after my initial bandage came off, I two had increased swelling and pain. The second bandage wasn't as constrictive as the first one and I think my foot was protesting more blood in it. It did get better though. Do call your doctor Monday if you don't have some relief.

Bob, I know what you feel like by night. Mine is the same way. When I get into bed it is swollen and purple. I take AquaPhor and gently massage my foot and toes. It helps a lot.

Going to go out and enjoy the warm sunshine! Hope everyone has a painfree day!

Thanks for the reassurance Jenny....makes me feel alot better about it. Now towards late afternoon I can definitely see it is improving. I'm encouraged now that tomorrow will see continued progress.

Beautiful sunshine here too...was out on the deck...glorious. .😃

So that now that the bandages are off, do you leave them off or still keep them bandaged up? I am finding the circulation is now cut off to my other toes, guess I better take it off for a while.

My foot felt very bare and vulnerable at first, I used to put the bandage on loosely for a couple of days, when putting on my shoe.

I really am glad of this forum, I think it has been a great help knowing that your own wee niggling problems are real and others feel the same, also feels like we get the surgery then are left very much to our own devices between consultant app, so thank you everyone who contribute whether it be about the weather or your day.

Anita, cold grey and rainy in Glasgow, which is normal, hope to get some sunshine soon.

I am off to the theatre today with daughter and grand daughter, bit scary about being enclosed in the aisle, feeling I might have to leave early, might be over 2 hours sitting, so extra painkillers just in case, going to see Annie the musical, bought the tickets ages ago. The girls are so looking forward to it. I will let you know how I feel tomorrow

Sunny here in Blairgowrie but so windy. I walked to the supermarket and found keeping my balance difficult. Now my legs ache and the soles of my feet are sore! Feet up for a while I think and a good massage. I'm finding that a massage with Bio-oil works wonders if my toes/feet are achy or swollen and I read somewhere that it helps with the foot mobility too. Got to love those tootsies!

Hope you enjoy the theatre Joan- let us know how the show was......and how you coped with your feet down for 2 hours.

    DAY 24

Good morning to my bunion friends.

Yesterday I was in a complete surrender, most of the day on the couch elevating, icing and chatting on Facebook with a couble people from this site thru " I SURVIVED A BUNIONECTOMY"

I must admit I am a bit bored and today is a new day, going to gear up after doing my ab crunches, pushups and other excersizes with my new dumbells a friend lent me. Although my back is bothering me from favoring this injury I feel I must move it or lose it everyday to the best of my ability.

The good news is I've been sleeping pretty well on my back and after 26 years of bad sleep habits while working in the firehouse, i'm able to nail down 7 - 8 hrs a night.

Joan - Hope you enjoyed family time. That's the gift we recieve everyday day, being there for our family. I am soooo looking forward to not burying mey feet this summer if I make it to the beach.

Anita - No playing in the snow, bad for bunion recovery, risky . lol

Rena - I actually sat out on my deck for 15 minutes and the sun felt so good on my bunionless foot.

Jenny - Going to for sure use your ice bag recipe. Good one. Thanks.

Carmen - Keep working that garden. Had ice on two long one day and developed a burn blister because I could feel anything due to numbness. careful everyone.

Well that's all for now. Still have alot of numbness and swelling, pretty much the same as yesterday.

Remember EASY DOES IT ( AH HUM TO MYSELF ) and we are taking it ONE DAY AT A TIME. Let's forget about tomorrow and let yesterday go.

    Have a blessed day biggrin

Tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow is just a day away. Bet you that tune will stick in your head all night now.

Was so uncomfortable in the theatre, no room to stretch leg out, then you get the people wanting by to go to the bathroom. I took an extra anti inflammatory, which kind of kicked in in the second half. But for my 4 and a half year old granddaughter it was worth it, her eyes never left the stage once she was totally engrossed in it, was a fab show, then we went for dinner, long day, but life goes on, I can rest tomorrow, tomorrow.

Bob, been thinking of getting some exercises done, but not got much past the thinking stage yet.

Anita hope you feel better soon.

Off to rub oil on my foot and a gentle massage, Eileen

Hi Everyone, it's 5am here where I live and I've been wide awake since about 2am so have passed the time reading this discussion right from the first post - funny how we find things when we need them - I've been following other discussions but hadn't seen this one till now, and it's just what I needed! ! I'm now on day 19, the pain and discomfort, not to mention the boredom, varies day to day. But my worst problem the last few days has been depression and feeling sorry for myself so it has been a big help to read that some of you go through it too occasionally. I really try to tell myself that at least my foot hasn't been amputated and I will get better, but at the same time feel so isolated and that no one around me realises what I'm going through. Even my husband who started out so well taking care of me now seems to be getting fed up with me! So I see that most of you post everyday a bit about how you're doing and feeling and am thinking that I must start doing the same, have been internalising everything too much! So look forward to chatting with you all, and hope everyone has a relief filled Sunday. Bye for now Patricia

Hello Patrica.....unfortunatly your husband will be caring for you for up to 3-4months.

    Break it to him gently.

My husband, daughter and best friend have treated me like Im wrapped in cotton wool.

Ive had pillows plumped, food served, favorite drink and chocolate all bought to me.Ive watched endless catch up RUBBISH tv,knitted a blanket done some gardening. Was here when workers put a new roof on.etc etc

I believed I would be up and running after 6 weeks that is what the consultant told me when I went to the first consultancy app.

I went back to the hospital on Friday, because I wasnt happy with the big toe it is now sloping in towards the hammer toe.He has given me some toe spacers to straighten the big toe. YOWCH this is causing pain.................

I nearly broke down when he gave me a sicknote for a further 3weeks ( im 8 weeks since operation) and said it could be 2months before Im back at work.

Depression comes and goes, just like the yummy cake and biscuits I have bought to me.

I went to see the vicar of Dibley last night at a theatre. I was able to sit reasonable comfortable throughout it. (Unlike 3 weeks ago when i went I took a little fold up stool with me a rested my leg on it , but was in agony)

To say you have to have a sense of humour in recovery is an understatement.

Take a day at a time listen to your foot it will tell you its feelings.

Thanks Be - fortunately for my husband he works in Khartoum in Sudan and is due to be called back there in the next week or so for about 7 weeks, so he's going to be able to escape from looking after me! So I have to confess I have been making the most of being able to rest while he's home. Am feeling a bit more cheerful this morning, the sun is shining - it's the end of summer here, so I'm going to get up to go with to my daughter's surf life saving lesson down at the beach in an hour and I'm sure just getting out in the sun will do me the world of good, will pop some more painkillers before we go. Bye for now

Patricia - I so know where you are coming from, today I am feeling sorry for myself, and I know I shouldn't there is nothing in life that I need, I have lovely family all looking after me, a few outings last week and also was out all day yesterday at the theatre. Had taken full doses of painkillers yesterday and wonder if that is the reason for feeling down today.

Be, your husband is well looking after you, mine has kind of given up a bit , theatre was so uncomfortable, I just wanted to leave but didn't want to let my daughter know that, so took extra painkillers and felt better.

I think the weather here on Glasgow is getting g me down, it's cold and rainy again, pleeeeease give me some sunshine.

I'm going to do some therapeutic tidying of drawers now and see if that helps.

My foot feels fine today, still swollen, just a little nippy but the scar areA is looking pretty good.
